First grade students will be involved in many end of the year assessments.  Please be sure to be reading DAILY with your child in preparation for the reading assessments.  Math assessments will be looking at fluency in addition and subtraction, counting to 100, skip counting, and reading and writing number words zero to one hundred.  Although the end of school is nearing, it is still critical for you to check agendas and complete homework nightly.  We strongly encourage to have your child involved in a summer reading program so they do not lose the progress they have made throughout the school year. We would also like for you to enforce with your child that good behavior is still a REQUIREMENT for a positive learning environment and participation in our end of the year reward activities. 

      For the next couplle of weeks our class will be studying lanforms. The children will be assigned to a group with whom they will need to complete a project. This will be a big part of their Social Studies grade this quarter.

       Please help us with this project!!!! We need A LOT of play dough!!! The children will be constructing their own landform models within their groups. The play dough can be bought or or homemade. There are several homemade recipes on the internet. We hope these to be large models that the children will learn a great deal from, as well as learn to work cooperatively within a group. I know this will be a wonderful learning and growing experience for the children. Please bring in your materials by Friday, March 9th.

Dear Parent,

Your first grader will begin having homework today. It will be their responsibility to copy their homework into their agenda/student planner every Monday. We will give you a copy of their homework assignments for the first few weeks to allow the children time to learn to record their homework. Please make sure that your first grader reads every day. Being successful at reading requires much practice. Please read with your child every night Monday thru Friday.  Please sign beside the date on your child’s reading log every day, usually it’s the next story that is on the list. This log is to be kept in their reading books. Your child will also have additional homework to be completed each night. If you would, please initial the line marked P.I. in their agenda every day after making sure that homework is completed. If your child does not bring home a reading assignment, please have them read a library book or any book from home and record it on the back of their reading log sheet as well.

This agenda is a good way for us to communicate about your child’s performance or behavior, as well as to let you know what might be going on at school at different times. Your initials let us know that you are aware of homework assignments and behavior. Any misbehaviors will be noted in the agenda. There is also a chart in the back of the agenda that indicates the number their clip was on at the end of the day.

Your child will have spelling words every week. Please practice these daily. Spelling tests will be given on Fridays. You may also find spelling words and homework assignments posted at: www.schoolnotes.com/28147/chavisma.html. 

Homework assignments are to give your child extra practice on skills that we are learning in class.  If you have any questions or concerns please let us know. Thank you for all that you do!
