Discuss vocabulary word meanings and the teacher reads story aloud. Set: Have students look at the picture on p. 190 of a deserted farm. Talk about why the people might have left. Set: Tell the students that I am “estimating” it will take about 15 minutes to watch the lesson. Ask if that means it definitely will be exactly 15 minutes or if it was an educated guess. Tell them they will learn to use the skill of estimation with fractions today. Close: Call on students to explain the meaning of “estimation” and “benchmark fractions”. HW: Reteaching 10-3 Objectives: 4.1.k(dok 2) Tuesday 10-4 Equivalent Fractions. Watch the Envision lesson. Use fraction strips to reinforce the concept. Set: Ask the students whether they would rather have ½ or 6/12 of a pizza. Lead them to the conclusion that it is the same amount. Close: Call on students to explain what equivalent fractions are. Objectives: 4.1.f(dok2) Wednesday Review equivalent fractions. Student will complete Practice 10-4 as guided practice. Set: Hold up pictures showing fractional parts and have them decide if they are equivalent. Close: Call on students to name a pair of equivalent fractions. HW: Reteaching 10-4 Objectives: 4.1.f(dok2) Thursday 10-5 Fractions in simplest form. Watch Envision lesson and practice at board. Set: Tell the students I am going to give them two examples of directions for making a peanut butter sandwich. One will be wordy and the other straight forward. Ask them which was simplest. Explain that fractions are the same way; a fractional part can have many names, but one will be simplest. Close: Ask students to explain in their own words what simplest form means. Objectives: 4.1.f(dok2) Friday Review simplest form. Complete Practice 10-5. Set: Show sets of fractions and point out the simplest form.
