I am so excited about teaching your child reading this year! I am a firm believer of the saying, "THE MORE YOU READ, THE BETTER READER YOU BECOME". I am asking that my students read at home daily, as many already do, striving to develop a lifelong habit of reading independently for enjoyment. I will never tell my students what they should be reading during this time...it is a choice that they get to make. Students are expected to read Monday-Friday nights for a minimum of 20 minutes a night. Each weekend, please review the log and make sure to sign it for the week. You may prefer to sign the log daily to ensure that your child is indeed reading. The reading log should ALWAYS be in the student's STAR LOG and should be up-to-date. I realize that Friday nights are sometimes very busy. Any time that your child reads over the weekend can be recorded for that time slot. My purpose is to provide practice to my students. All of our baseball players, pianists, and cheerleaders practice to perfect their skills. Our readers need the same type of practice. Please make sure that your child is "practicing" using "equipment" that will benefit them. In other words, the text that your child is reading should not be too hard or too easy. The best practice occurs when the text is "just right"! More importantly, help provide your child with books, magazines, newspapers, comic books, etc., that are exciting to him/her. I promise I will help on this end. We all have books in our classrooms that can be checked out, and the Rockwell School Media Center is great! The Rockwell Town Library has a lot of wonderful books, too. Scholastic book orders will be sent home monthly, also. Together we can make daily reading important in your child's life, today and all the days to come! If you need to contact me, please e-mail: lamarresn@rss.k12.nc.us or call (704)279-3145.
