We will be studying Modern World Cultures this year! Japan, India, and China will be our first unit of study with the focus on Economic Powerhouses. The next unit is on the European Union specifically studying the division and unification of modern Europe. The third unit will focus on Brazil and Venezuela in South America. We will be learning about their developing economies and emerging democracies. Last, we will focus on Africa - Nigeria and South Africa with the focus on "compare/contrast" - developed and developing economies and democracies.

7th grade will continue with Modern World Cultures focusing on Asia: Indonesia, VIetnam, N. Korea; Middle East; Russia & former Soviet Republics; and North America.

8th grade will focus on American History!

Academic Habits -

All homework should be neat, legible, and your BEST work. If you are typing the homework, it must be in Times New Roman, 12 font, black ink, double spaced. The 3 layer cake MUST be in the upper right hand corner - name, date, period and make sure you check your spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure! You should TTQA - turn the question(s) around so the reader knows what you are talking about unless otherwise indicated.

If handwriting homework, use a full sheet of white lined paper, 3 layer cake - name, date, period - and see above directions!

Assessments and Performance Tasks

Tests will be given at the end of each unit with formatives during each unit. Students will receive 1 week notice of assessments. Assessments and Performance Tasks must be taken in school and will not go home. Reflections after each assessment will be very specific and informative with a metacognition piece for students to think about their performance and what changes they will make for the next time. Formatives inform my instruction as well as the student's study habits. Although these do not "count" as a grade, they are to be taken seriously as they indicate student understanding.

Any questions, email me!

Some words for thought:

"...the goal of social studies is to develop responsible citizens who understand their interdependence with others and can make reasoned and informed decisions for the good of a diverse public." Jones, Pang, Rodriguez

"Social Studies in the Elementary Classroom: Culture Matters"

If you plan for a year, plant rice,

for ten years, plant trees,

for a hundred years, educate the people.

We have not inherited the earth from our ancestors.

We have only borrowed it from our children.
