Week of 10/13-10/17:
Sports Medicine-
This is a full year course (1st Block "B" Day) designed for students interested in fields such as athletic training, physical therapy, medicine, fitness, physiology of exercise, kinesiology, nutrition, and other sports medicine related fields. The course includes class work and practical hands-on application in the following areas: prevention, nutrition, anatomy and physiology, fitness/conditioning/strength programs, and sports medicine careers. This course is open to juniors and seniors and the prerequisite is the successful completion of 2 years of health and fitness.
For the upcoming weeks we will be discussing different techniques to help assisting a victim who is either conscious or unconscious. We will review "hands-on" techniques as well as book work sponsored by the American Red Cross. A performance based assessment will be given to measure the accuracy of performing the right medical care. Techniques that will be taught consist of CPR and AED training. A written assessment will be given Wednesday.
Physical Education/Health-
In health class we have learned about disease and health. Particulary students have a better understanding of communicable and non-communicable disease, heart disease, cancer, active immunity, passive immunity, alcohol, tobacco and caffeine, prescription vs. over-the-couner medications, the effects of drug misuse and abuse, and the various community health agencies.
In physical education students completed a volleyball unit and are currntly finishing a unit in soccer. It has been enjoyable with the great weather and playing on the turf at the Wesley College stadium. The week of Oct. 13 students will complete their second Physical Best Assessemnt. The individual activities include the one mile run, push-ups, curl-ups, sit-&-reach, trunk lift, and body fat analysis. Encourage your child to do their best!
Please make sure that your child has sneakers and a change of clothes on their PE days. It is critical to their success in this class. Your support is needed and appreciated!
