  Notes and Reminders Wow! I can't believe that the first quarter is over. We have done a lot of work so far this year. Accelerated Reading Congratulations to the following students for making 50% of their AR goal: Cody E., Ian R., Cody G., Olivia K. An extra special congratulations goes to the following students for making 150% of their AR goal: Rider R., Jackson L., Michael S., Chloe W., Breanna E. **In order to make the 4th quarter AR reward, you must meet 100% of your goal 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and, of course, 4th quarter.**
 Reading: I can't believe we have finished our first theme: Silly Stories. We have started Theme 2: Nature Walk. We will read about nature walks, park rangers, a camping trip, and take a look at fables. We will work in small groups where the learning can be more individualized and more time can be spent helping the students. Mrs. Hosey will teach grammar skills to the students, and I will use the leveled readers with the students. They will practice their spelling words and their handwriting. The students will also get a chance to R.I.P. (Read In Peace) and respond to what they have read. We will also write back and forth in their Reader Response Journal. We will be very busy during our Literacy Block.
Writers Workshop: We began the year by reviewing our parts of speech. We completed mini-projects on nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Then we learned the difference between the "who" and the "what" of a sentence. Now we are working on identifying and learning the different types of sentences: telling sentences, questions, commands, and exclamations. Remember to capitalize and punctuate all sentences correctly.
Math: For the first nine weeks of school, we will review place value for numbers up to 100. We will learn more about the hundreds place and connect a number with its model and its word form. We will also read numbers, compare and order numbers, estimate, and identify odd and even numbers. We will also review addition and subtraction using multiple strategies.
Social Studies: We began the year by learning what it means to be a responsible citizen. Now we will move into Unit 2: Our Community Leaders. We'll talk about mayors, judges, and even our president. We might even have a class election!
 Science: We are going to begin our study in science learning about Changes in Weather. With the cooler weather of fall, we will graph weather changes and learn different weather words.
