What we're currently studying
Reading: We have begun Theme 2: Nature Walk. We have enjoyed reading different stories and writing about things in nature.
On Mondays, we listen and read the story, discuss the story, and work with our comprehension skill. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the students work in small groups where the learning can be more individualized and more time can be spent helping the students. Mrs. Hosey uses the leveled readers with the students, and I review the story and the literacy skill for the week. The students are involved in other centers like handwriting, working with technology, and writing back and forth to me in their Reader Response Journal. There is also a listening center and a center that integrates other subject areas with language arts. Last, but not least, we individually conference with each student severals times per week on different reading assignments. On Thursdays, we use different games, strategies, and activities to review the story. On Fridays, we test our knowledge and comprehension of the story by completing a comprehension test. These tests are in a similar format of the EOGs the students will be required to take next year in third grade. As you can see, we are very busy during our Literacy Block.

Writers Workshop: We have been real busy during Writer's Workshop so far this year. We have focused on the four types of sentences: statement, command, question, and exclamation. We have reviewed punctuation for each of these, as well as capitalizing the beginning of all sentences. We have worked on a small moment story, writing about "A Time you were happy."
Math: The students have explored many different strategies in addition and subtraction. We will move into place value next!

Social Studies: Mrs. Hunter: We are working on geography terms.
Science: We have started the year with a unit on the Weather.
