Computer Curriculum Objectives

1st Quarter- 2008-2009

 

Kindergarten

The students will be introduced to the basic outer parts of the computer, and begin to become familiar with several input and output devices.  During their weekly scheduled time in the Computer Lab they will be introduced to the Paint program. The students will use the Mouse and some of the basic drawing tools to create a variety of designs as they become comfortable with the “click”, “double click” and “click and drag”. 

 

Grade 1

The students will briefly review the essential inner and outer components of the personal computer.  They will use the Paint program, expanding the use of the various “tools” available in this program.  Keyboarding instruction will continue with the use of the Type to Learn 3 program. They will be introduced to word processing through the WordPad program.

 

Grade 2

In addition to a review of the essential inner parts of the personal computer as well as its basic components, the students will work in WordPad and Paint. Using WordPad, they will practice their writing skills, accessing formatting tools from both the “toolbar” and the “menu bar”.  Keyboarding instruction will be continued with the use of the Type to Learn 3 program.

 

Grade 3

The students will be given a brief history of the computer, a review of its inner and outer components as well as an understanding of its operation, with the aid of a video “The Journey Inside”. They will practice basic word processing skills, creating documents in Microsoft Word, and investigate saving locally and to a server. They will create graphics in Paint and import them into text documents. Keyboarding instruction will continue with the use of the Type to Learn 3 program.

 

Grade 4

The students will examine some of its basic components with the use of a video “The Journey Inside”. The students will use Microsoft Word to create documents. Included among them will be researching and writing a brief history of the computer. The documents will be saved to and accessed the server.  They will be introduced to the use of the “thumb/flash drive”. Additional formatting techniques will be explored as well. Keyboarding instruction will continue with the use of the Type to Learn 3 program, with the objective of achieving the competence necessary for typing some of their class assignments.  Proper keyboarding will be emphasized and practiced at all times.

 

Grade 5

The students will begin with a brief overview of the history of the computer, and review of the inner and outer components as well as the basic uses of the personal computer. They will further their knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint through a variety of projects. They will be introduced to the use of the “thumb/flash drive”. Keyboarding instruction will continue with the use of the Type to Learn 3 program.  Proper keyboarding will be emphasized and practiced at all times.

 

Grade 6

The students will briefly review the history, components, as well as the day to day uses of the personal computer. They will continue to work in Microsoft Word, and be introduced to the use of the “thumb/flash drive”. They will also work with Excel, creating graphs and importing them into Word documents. They will study cyber-ethics and its impact on their daily lives. Keyboarding instruction will continue with the use of the Type to Learn 3 program.  Proper keyboarding will be emphasized and practiced at all times.  The students are encouraged to work towards accuracy first and then speed.

 

Grade 7

The students will briefly review the history, components, as well as the day to day uses of the personal computer. They will review the features Microsoft Word and PowerPoint in addition to review the creation and formatting of graphs in Excel.  They will be introduced to the use of the “thumb/flash drive”. They will also study cyber-ethics and its impact on their daily lives. Keyboarding instruction will be continued with the use of the Type to Learn 3 program.  Proper keyboarding will be emphasized and practiced at all times.  The students will be encouraged to work towards accuracy first and then speed.

 

Grade 8

The students will briefly review the history, components, as well as the day to day uses of the personal computer.  They will continue to work with Microsoft Word. They will be introduced to the use of the “thumb/flash drive” within our school environment. They will study cyber-ethics and its impact on their daily lives. The students will have an opportunity to employ the various skills learned through long term projects. Keyboarding instruction will be continued with the use of the Type to Learn 3 program.  Proper keyboarding will be emphasized and practiced at all times.  The students will be encouraged to work towards accuracy first and then speed, focusing on the Diocesan guidelines goal of 30 wpm with 95% accuracy.
