Eagles' Reading Reading and Math FCAT is over. I am very proud of how hard each student worked! We are quickly approaching the end of 3rd quarter. The last day of Quarter 3 is March 26th. There is no school, Friday, March 27th, due to a Teacher Duty Day. Please be sure to check Parent Link for your child's grade. They are updated every Wednesday. If you have any questions please e-mail or call. This Saturday, March 21st, our class will move back into the building. It is very exciting! The new room is beautiful and equipped with a SMART Board! I can not wait to do interactive lessons with each class. This week we will begin reading "Elephant Run" which is our One Book One School reading initiative! Students will be given vocabulary words they will encounter in their reading each night. They are to define the words and bring the definitions into class the next day to share. An Illustrated Dictionary will also be completed as we read the book. The 4th Quarter Reading Project will be based on "Elephant Run" as well. Be on the lookout for these directions in the next 2 weeks. New vocabulary words containing the roots "aqua" and "hydro" meaning water; "mar" and mer" meaning sea; and "geo" and "terr" meaning land and earth will be studied for the next week and a half. Please study the definitions of the roots and words. Students will also write a sentence for each word. Every sentence should be at least 7 words in length. It will be due Monday, March 23rd. This vocabulary test will be given on March 25th. Below are this weeks' lesson plans. _________________________________________________________________ MONDAY: Bell Work: Write homework in planner for week. Collect Page Log and record pages read on chart. FCAT Science Session 1: 9:55-11:05 Break: 11:05-11:15 FCAT Science Session 2: 11:15-12:25 Lunch: 1:16-1:41 Per. 4, 5, 6, 7: Introduce Elephant Run vocabulary words: blitz, Luftwaffe, koongyi, choon,”mustered out”, mahouts, singoung, dah, fodder, serenaded, dissension, liberate, defiance, pagoda for Tuesday’s reading. Begin personal illustrated dictionary for all words. _________________________________________________________________________TUESDAY: Bell Work: Copy/Solve analogies All Classes: Introduce vocabulary words that contain word roots “aqua-water, geo-land/earth, hydr-water, mar, mer-sea, terr-land/earth”. Glue vocabulary and study sheet in reading spiral. Write a sentence for each word, due March 24th Elephant Run: Read pgs. 2-19. In your reading log, start a timeline of Nick’s life up to the end of Chap. 2. Write 3-4 sentences describing the kind of person Magwe is (including supportive details from the book). Give words and definitions to students that did not receive them on Monday. Introduce Elephant Run vocabulary words immaculately, attired, heirloom, dicey, embossed, veranda, longyis, retrieve, monsoons, monk, impale, inevitable for Wed. reading. TLW: Actively engage in the reading process. TLW: Identify and understand the meaning of words derived from Greek/Latin roots. ___________________________________________________________________WEDNESDAY: Bell Work: Copy/Solve analogies All Classes: Elephant Run: Assignment: Read pgs. 20-35. In your reading log, compare and contrast Nick’s disappointment with a disappointment you have had in your life. Introduce Elephant Run vocabulary words violated, cardinal, curt, parboiled, surly, fettered ohndone, thay-ay, defensively, devilment, monastery for Friday’s reading. Work on illustrated dictionary if time permits.

TLW: Analyze characters of text through discussion and higher order thinking. ____________________________________________________________________________________FRIDAY: Bell Work: Copy/Solve 2 analogies All classes: Partner Fluency testing. Chart fluency rate on individual graphs. Elephant Run: Assignment: Read pgs. 50-67 and make a timeline of the training that timber elephants must have before beginning to work in the forest when they are older. Work on illustrated dictionary if time permits. TLW: Read one-minute timed fluency passage with partner. TLW: Actively engage in the reading process. These words will be used for an illustrated dictionary for Elephant Run. ________________________________________________________________Independent Reading Information: 6th grade students are required to read 650 to 700 pages each quarter. 7th and 8th grade students are required to read 750 to 800 pages each quarter. This goal should be met by Friday, March 20th. It carries a weight of 10% of the final reading grade. Each book read during the quarter is documented on the Yellow Book Log located in the Reading Folder. It must be verified by a parent with his/her signature. (It is due March 20th.) |
