WELCOME TO MATH OLYMPIADS! ![]() Here at Hall School Math Olympiad is open to excellent math students in fourth, fifth and sixth grade. Students come out of their math classes once a week to learn strategies for and gain experience with challenging math problems. Sixth grade students come out of ER. Once a month they work on a timed set of contest problems, and their scores are submitted to the Math Olympiad office. There are 5 sets of contest problems in the year in November, December, January, February and March. Students from all over the United States and several other countries complete the same problems each month. Students in fourth and fifth grade also have a set of 5 or 6 problems to practice on at home each week. It is important that the students try the problems, even though they are difficult. They may not get to a solution, but they will be in a better position to understand and learn from our discussions of the problem if they have already tried it. The practice problems are not graded, and do not count in the classroom math grades. If it is not finished, it does not count as missed homework in the fourth or fifth grade classes. Students judged able to keep up with the work in math class that they miss when they come to Math Olympiad and who need more challenge in math are encouraged by their teachers to join. HELP SESSIONS Extra help is available for 4th and 5th grade Math Olympiad problems on day 4 during periods A1 and A2. Grade 4: The team meets on day 2 from 8:30 to 9:15. Each week a different problem solving strategy is highlighted. Week of 2/9: All students will be taking the February contest problems this week. |
