Today students worked on their poetry books. The homework for the week is as follows:

Type two more poems for Friday.

You should have a total of six poems typed.

On a separate page you should have the title of the poem, examples of sounds of poetry, what form of poem it is, and what inspired you to write the poem.

You should also have completed the final copy of the “about the author”

There is a vocabulary quiz on Wednesday, be sure to study the 20 words from Hatchet.

The last Scholastic Book Order for the year is due on Wednesday. You may order online by using my code: J3YTM. You can order from any level when you order online. Order soon, since the end of the school year is approaching fast.

Write an “About the Author” page for your poetry book.

Write about yourself.

Include your name, state, and city where you live.

Also include family, hobbies, pets, favorite foods, or other interesting facts about yourself.

This should be first hand-written as a rough draft.

Peer-proofed in class, then typed.

Insert a photo of yourself in the upper right hand corner.

Presentations begin tomorrow. Only four students will present on a day. This way, hopefully we can have poetry lessons too.

There will be a quiz next Tuesday on "Sounds of Poetry" and the "Figures of Speech" we are discussing. Students received the words today and will have them to take home tomorrow.

Don't forget the "Extra Credit" Assignment I gave you last week.

Students took their rough draft biography home today. They need to finish by following the outline. Final copy is due Tuesday, March 20. Remember to print 3 copies.

Presentations will begin Tuesday, so don't forget your 3 photos for the presentation. The 4th photo is for your Cover Page. (You only need to print one cover page).

The poem is still due on Monday.

Students should have finished their notetaking for their biographies. We are writing the rough draft in school. Please remember to bring your notes and biography to class each day.

Today all students handed in their Answer Booklets and Book Club Books. The 10 questions related to book club reading were due today. Wed. is the last day to hand these questions in for a grade. Please note this is a test grade.

Please note that all summaries for Touching Spirit Bear, originally due on 2/2 must be turned in by tomorrow. I will not accept them after this date.

Most students are finished with their book club questions, if not I will give you time to work on them tomorrow. However, you should be almost finished, with only two questions left. I am collecting book club books tomorrow. Please remember to return your book. (Except for new students)

Since we have vacation, it is a good time to catch up on your biography. You should have finished reading the book and should be finished with notetaking by Thursday March 1.

Today students changed groups. I have almost all my past students with a few new faces.

Please note that students are still working on their biographies. I discovered today that many students are not reading or taking notes at home. We are reviewing skills in preparation for the CMTs in March and working on the biography and open-ended questions for Book Club books. Therefore, it is important to put at least 30-40 minutes of reading and notetaking into your schedule at home, each night.

I will be checking Record Sheets again this Thursday.

Students conferenced with me today on their rough drafts for the Touching Spirit Bear summary. The final draft should be typed and is due with the rubric on Monday.

Students worked on their questions for their book club book today.

Students should continue to work on reading and taking notes for their biography.

All book club books should be finished.

Monday we will start working on biographies. Students are encouraged to go to the library to get a biography. Bring to class. I asked them to discover someone new and to choose carefully (no athletes or singers). Choose someone that has changed the world. They will receive the rubric and a timeline on Monday. We will go to the media center also and I have some biographies in class if they cannot find one at the library. Parents are asked to sign the timeline.

Also Students are asked to bring in a pocket folder if they don't have one already for class. They will be given many handouts to keep in this folder and it will help them with organization. Thanks.

We discussed the "Punctuation Prompt" in class. Students will need to complete this at home.

Compare and Contrast essays are due Thursday.

There will be a midterm exam next Wednesday, 1/18. A study guide was sent home with students. Definitions for terms can be found in students notebooks.

Students were given reading over the weekend and were asked to answer the following question about their reading:

Choose information from the book that you think is interesting. Describe clearly and explain why it is interesting. Support your answer with details.

Complete final draft for compare and contrast essay. Follow the rubric carefully. If you were absent when we watched the movie, then write an essay describing in detail what you did over the holiday vacation. Due Thursday 1/12.

Students took a mini-midterm on Wed. after they returned from the long weekend. They should receive their grades by Monday. Please sign tests that are 60% or lower.

We are working on organizing our Marble Notebooks today and One subject Notebooks tomorrow, by pasting a "Table of Contents" in both books. Some students are realizing they are missing work or are disorganized; they are even surprised by this. So I told them to get it done and try to catch up.

Next week Proress Reports will be mailed home. However, grades have already been averaged. Made up work will count for the second part of the quarter.

LA-03 Remember to glue your photo on the front of your marble notebook.

All Groups: Read article about juvenile delinquency and answer questions. Bring in signed Book Club Letter.

4. Word Wall Vocabulary (posted in the classroom-we are reviewing in class)

5. Quotations in dialogue.

In addition, a practice sheet on abbreviations was assigned today and is due tomorrow.

September 22, 2011 Thanks to all who attended Open House. It was wonderful meeting you and seeing some of you again.

Today students worked in reading groups. By now groups should have completed their vocabulary charts, paragraph on character traits, and possibly finished their character connection paragraph.

All students should be finished with their research on geographical facts and customs. Some students are not doing this and it is causing problems within their groups. They are realizing that it is important to get work finished or there may be consequences; specifically disappointment from group members.

Tomorrow we will work on the writing process for the friendly letter.

So far we have had a great start to the year. Can someone please do something about the rain?

I have met all my students and they are wonderful. We have been working on the 5 Parts of a friendly letter, Cornell Note taking, and general procedures throughout the class and building.

All students should have their supplies by now for my class. Tonight tape or glue a current photo of yourself to your marble notebook. We will use this to focus on our writing tomorrow in class.
