Friday, November, 20, 2009 1. Because of the short week next week, all rough drafts for poem number 2 are due on Monday. The final poem is due Wed. Thursday, November 19, 2009 1. Final copy of poem is due. Remember to write or type your explanation and reasoning on the back of the paper. This is what we went over today in class. Be sure to write your reasoning in paragraph form with a topic sentence that identifies the type of poem (form or free-verse), title, and if your poem is a limerick, catolog, cinquain, etc. Remember your ending sentence with a transition word. Lastly, remember to draw a picture to go with your poem. This picture should be on the same page as your poem. 2. Poster board is due tomorrow. 3. Read and bring novel for "Reading with the Stars". ****************************************** Wednesday, November 18, 2009 1. Revise Creature Essay. Due tomorrow to receive an upgrade. 2. Work on final copy poem. Remember it should be typed on 8 1/2 X 11 printer paper. ******************************************** Tuesday, November 17, 2009 1. Rough draft of poem is due tomorrow. Remember to write it in your marble notebook. You can write about any subject: sports, yourself, family, pets, seasons, animals. Think about the poetry we have shared in class. You can even write five poems about the same topic, as long as your poems are all different forms. Your pictures are not due tomorrow. 2. Remember to read your "Reading with the Stars" novel. 3. Poster board for classroom project is due Friday. ******************************************** MOnday, November 16, 2009 1. Complete the next five words on your vocabulary chart. Numbers 49-53. 2. Work on your poetry for this week. Your rough draft is due Wednesday. Please write all your rough drafts in your marble notebooks. Final copies are due Friday. The final copy should be typed and you should include a colorful picture on the same paper. Your pictures can be drawn with some computer graphics, but you cannot just use computer graphics. Read over this assignment and take special note of the poem deadlines. You can follow the "Types of Poems to Help You Write Yours" handout, or you can write a free-verse poem. WE will discuss more tomorrow, so be sure to read the directions and come in with your questions. ********************************************** Thursday, November 12, 2009 1. Your poem written in marble notebook is due. 2. Vocabulary Chart 49-53. Remember to make a prediction first before you look up the definition. Also, be sure to read how the word is used within the sentence. 3. Tomorrow is Reading with the Stars, so be sure to bring your novel to school. Many students either didn't finish from last week, or missed the prompt because of band practice. 4. You should be reading every night for 30-40 minutes. ******************************************** Monday, November 9, 2009 We did not meet today because of the field trip, however, you should still read for Reading with the Stars. Also continue reading poetry to choose a poem. You will receive this assignment tomorrow. Here it is: 1. Write your favorite poem in your marble notebook. (Skip two pages after "Bogus Boo") 2. Be sure to place the title at the top of the page and put quotations around it. 3. Write the poet's name after you write the poem. 4. Explain "why" you chose this poem. 5. What feelings do you experience when you read this poem? ********************************************** Thursday, November 5, 2009 1. Be sure to bring your novel for "Reading with the Stars". You will need them for an activity in class tomorrow. 2. Read for 40 minutes or more! 3. Ms. Oudheusden's students will finish the vocabulary test tomorrow, so study hard! 4. We didn't discuss yet, but if you want to start reading poetry-go for it. I will ask you next Tuesday to bring in a favorite poem. Poem "Bogus Boo" Complete numbers 1-4 in your marble notebook. WE will begin to talk more about poetry, but I would like to know what you know about poetry. How can you tell this piece of writing is poetry? How is it set up on the page? Does all poetry look like this? 2. Complete the next 5 vocabulary words on your list. For group LA-03, you only have to complete three more words. Due on Monday. Be sure to keep studying for the test on Nov. and 4 and 5. 3. Scholastic Book Orders are due tomorrow. Tuesday, October 27, 2009 1. Study vocabulary words for test Nov. 4 (note new date). Because there are so many words, I will divide the test in half. Nov. 4 will be words 1-24 and Nov. 5 will be words 25-38. 2. Quick Write: Write one page minimum about the following proverb: "Actions speak louder than words." You can write what you think this proverb means and write about an example from your own life that may connect to this. If you missed class today, write this definiton of a proverb in your blue book: A proverb is a short, traditional saying expressing an obvious truth. Also, please let me know what chapters you missed from yesterday and today. I will let you borrow Touching Spirit Bear to make up the reading. ******************************************* You Monday, October 26, 2009 1. Creature Essay is due tomorrow. 2. Complete Vocabulary definitions 21-24; LA-03 can do vocabulary words 25-30. Remember to continue to study all vocabulary. Thursday, October 22, 2009 1. Work on Creature Essay. 2. Study your vocabulary words for Touching Spirit Bear. You will have a test on November 5. It is important to start studying these now. You will continue to get new words next week. You will need to study these as well. 3. All groups except LA-04, need to revise their interviews for tomorrow. Remember to hand in your revised interview and rubric again to receive an upgrade. 4. Tomorrow is Reading with the Stars. Please remember to bring the novel you are currently reading. I am expecting many of you to have new novels to add in your blue books. 3. The directions are really tricky and ask you to do several steps as you locate different nouns. Be careful and read directions carefully. 2. All Reading with the Stars activities are due tomorrow. We will be reviewing the sheet given to you in class today again tomorrow, so all questions may be addressed. You can start working on this writing assigment tonight. Following the directions on the paper. They are self explanatory. However, I would rather you type your final copy instead of writing it out on loose leaf. Please read the assignment sheet and my example tonight and come in with any questions you have tomorrow. I will answer all of them. The rubric is clear.
Remember, tomorrow is a half day. Monday, October 19, 2009 Wonderful writing with last week's responses! 1. Finish the Quick Write in blue book Touching Spirit Bear. Write a one page answer about a time when you felt defiant or rebellious. What did you do? Why is Cole so defiant or rebellious? Remember to write in complete sentences, include a topic sentence, several supporting facts from the story, and an ending sentence. 2. Complete Vocabulary definitions for 11-15. Be sure to include the part of speech for each word in you answer. 3. All Reading with the Stars Activities are due this Thursday, Oct. 22. No Exceptions! ********************************************** Thursday-Oct. 15- Quick Write. Write a minimum of one page in your blue response journal. Write a connection or definition to the word bullying. You can write about an experience you had, someone else had, or write about Cole in Touching Spirit Bear. You can also write what you think the word bullying means or you can write both a connection and the definition.
