   Welcome to Hurley Elementary School

             We are WILD about Learning!

Hurley students will see me again this year on a

weekly rotating basis.  Lessons will be in the Media

Center and will consist of social skills and character

education activities.  I know we will have lots of fun

together.  Please feel free to call me here at Hurley if

you have any issues or concerns regarding your child.

Listening can be a difficult art to conquer.  Some

suggestions on how parents can model good

listening skills include:

BE INTERESTED AND ATTENTIVE:  Children can tell

whether they have a parent's interest and attention

by the way parents reply or do not reply.  Forget

about the telephone and other distractions.  Maintain

eye contact to show that you really are with the child.

ENCOURAGE TALKING:  Some children need an

invitation to start talking.  Ask them about their

day or ask their opinion.

LISTEN PATIENTLY:  People think faster than they

speak.  With limited vocabulary and experience

in talking, children often take longer than adults

to find the right word.  Listen as though you have

plenty of time.

HEAR CHILDREN OUT:  Allow them the opportunity

to have opinions.  Let them finish what they have

to say.  Don't interrupt.

LISTEN TO NONVERBAL MESSAGES:  Many messages

children send are communicated nonverbally by their

tone of voice, facial expressions, energy level, posture,

or changes in their behavior patterns.  You can often

tell more from the way a child says something than

from what is actually being said.

I hope your Spring Break was restful and relaxing.

EOG testing is scheduled for the middle of May with

retesting available for late May and early June.

Encourage your child to do his/her best!
