All of Mr. July’s math classes utilize an online web-based learning system called ALEKS (Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces). Students spend much of their class time working at the computer receiving instruction and completing objectives presented by ALEKS.

ALEKS is a web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics he or she is most ready to learn. As a student works through the math course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple choice questions. A student who shows a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will be successful in the actual course he or she is taking.

You, the parent, can see your child's progress in ALEKS at any time. Simply have your child sign on to ALEKS from your home computer and take a look at his or her pie chart or any of the other progress indicators. If you check in on a regular basis then you will be able to compare your child's progress from week to week.

A large part of your child's grade will be based on the number of objectives that he or she successfully completes. The total grade will be based on the following criteria:
  • The number of ALEKS objectives completed.
  • The amount of time spent on ALEKS both in class and outside of class.
  • Assessments and quizzes that will be used to test the mastery of ALEKS objectives.
  • Lectures, demonstrations and/or projects on math topics presented Mr. July.
  • Review sheets, book work and quizzes given by Mr. July.
Since ALEKS is the primary delivery system for math most of your child's homework is done right on ALEKS. Therefore, students can work on their math from any computer, anywhere as long as it is connected to the internet. Just go to ALEKS.com and follow the directions. If your child is absent for any reason they can still work on objectives and take assessments and quizzes as long as they have a computer to access their ALEKS class.
