On this website you will find some helpful reminders of classroom procedures and hints to help your child be succcessful in school. 


Homework

Your child will have certain homework assignments weekly. These are as follows:

1) Read for 30 minutes every night. Please have your child write the title of the book they read in their agenda. As a parent, you will sign the agenda each night, acknowledging that they read for 30 minutes.

2) Spelling. Your child has weekly spelling homework. Spelling words will be copied down weekly in their agenda. The direction sheet should be in their 3-ring binder. Please also see spelling directions on the bottom of this page. They will choose three activities to complete and turn in each Friday. 
No spelling words for the week of the EOG!

3) Writing. Your child will complete writing throughout the week. On Monday they will complete a focus map to plan their story. On Tuesday they will complete a flow chart (a more detailed plan of the story), on Wednesday they will complete a rough draft (sloppy copy) and on Thursday they will complete their final copy. This homework should be completed in their writing homework notebook and will also be turned in Friday morning. 


Donations are always appreciated. Our class can always use index cards (any size, any color), pencils, erasers, tissues, notebook paper or anything else that you would like to give.



Consequences:
Green card: Uh-ohh! (Warning)
Blue card: Silent Lunch or Thinking Laps
Yellow card: note to parent and discussion about behavior
Red card: phone call to parents and/or office referral



We are now departmentalizing, meaning that our students go to another teacher for their math and science instruction. Please see Mrs. Troutman's website for information on what your student is doing in math and science.

8:30-10:15 Math/science with Mrs. Troutman
10:15-11:00- Social Studies
11:05-11:35- Lunch
11:35-12:00- Bathroom/water/teacher read aloud
12:00-1:00- Language arts
1:00-2:00- Writing
2:00-2:30- Recess
2:30-3:00- Intervention/ Acceleration


Enhancements: Tuesday, Art 12:00-12:45
All other enhancements take place on Thursday.

              Reading



Everyday your child is expected to read for 30 minutes. Your child should write the title of the book they read each night in their agenda. As a parent, you will sign that they have read. 

Reading groups will take place at least 3 days per week in reading. There I have different activities used to meet the needs of all the students. This gives me a chance to work with students on their reading level as well as give the students a chance to feel successful during reading instruction. The ultimate goal is to move all students up to the proper reading level for our grade.

We are currently working on our theme Problem Solvers. A link to the reading book website is located at the bottom of this page. On this website your child can play games and practice vocabulary that goes along with the stories they read in class. 

We are also preparing for the EOG  each week by reading practice EOG passages and discussing how to find the best answers. You may hear your student talk about their UNRAAVEL strategy, it is explained below:

Underline the title
Now predict the passage 
write down on your paper what the story's about
Run through the paragraphs 
number them one by one. 
You know it's a new paragraph because it will indent
Are you reading the questions?
Are the important words circled? 
look at them closely, write down what they mean
Venture through the passage
read it so carefully, if you think you hear an answer make it stand out
Eliminate the wrong answers
Let the correct answer be found
write down where you found it and how you know it's right!



Writing
Each student will be required to write in their writing homework notebook throughout the week.  I am looking for the focus and organization.  It is important to allow your child to write.  I want to see how your child writes-please do not make corrections on this assignment.  

Social Studies

We are studying all about North Carolina.  We will begin by studying the geography of North Carolina. We will also discuss early America and how North Carolina became a state. Your child may have homework in their social studies book. They answer the questions by writing in their book.
