May 27, Wednesday.  Several students will take the reading eog retest tomorrow morning.  We did go over some test taking strategies today, and these students had a chance to ask questions and review.  All students who have Language Arts textbooks need to return those asap.  The Media Center still has over 300 books overdue...all these books need to be returned.   

May 26, Tuesday.  Dance tickets go on sale today at lunch.  Students from periods 1 and 2 need to return their language arts test book as soon as possible.  Students in periods 1 and 2 who have not finished the reading up to and including chapter 14 must sign out a book during busroom and complete the reading and discussion questions at home tonight. Many students still have not returned their overdue books to the Media Center.

May 22, Friday.  Many students still have not had their progress reports signed... lunch detention until it is returned.  All students who plan to attend the 8th grade dance must have a permission slip signed to purchas a ticket.  Students in periods 1 and 2 must return their Language Arts textbook; replacement cost on this text is over $50.

May 12, Tuesday.  Review Literary Devices that were handed out  and discussed in class yesterday.  There will be a test on these literary devices on Friday- matching terms and definitions.

May 11, Monday.  Prepare Poetry Portfolilo to be turned in tomorrow 5/12.  Your rubric should be on top with your name and your score from the recitation, followed by your eight  ten-line poems and reflections and finally poetry terms.  Be sure to review Literary Terms sheet given in class today for a test on Friday.  After scoring Blue Diamond Fifth Quarter tests- I was able to add extra credit points to student's grades.  Many points were applied to poetry terms quizzes.   

May 8, Friday.  Revise poetry and reflections for Poetry Portfolio due May 12.  All students have had time to type these in class today.  Periods 1 and 2 bring discussion questions for The Giver on Monday.  Periods 3 and 4 bring A Midsummer Night's Dream and discussion questions on Monday.  Enjoy your weekend before we review for EOGs next week.  Science EOG on Monday 5/18, Math on 5/19, Tuesday and Reading on 5/20, Wednesday

April 28, Tuesday.  Revise and revisit the poetry we have been writing in class.  Poetry memorization recitations will be next Monday, May 4 and Tuesday, May 5.  Students must recite 50 words of a poem- no Shel Silverstein nor Dr. Suess nor song lyrics.  I must have a copy of the poem for the recitation to check for accuracy.  I am encouraging students to memorize one of their own poems for the recitation.  Students are working on Poetry Terms as well for a quiz next week  5/5                                                        Today we have the honor of meeting and hearing a Holocaust survivor, Morris Glass.  I am looking forward to hearing the students reactions to him. 

April 27, Monday.  Complete abstract poem that we started in class today.  Revise poems that you have written in class for your Poetry Portfolio due May 12.  Poetry memorization and recitations will be next Monday, May 4 and Tuesday May 5.  Students must recite 50 words of a poem- songs will not be accepted as poems.  I am encouraging students to memorize one of their own poems for recitation.

April 24, Friday.  Students are to complete poem that they started in class today.  This is based on the Langston Hughes' "Theme for English B"  This poem should be about what people want or expect from them, and this poem should be 10 lines long.

April 23, Thursday.  Students are to complete 10 line "I am" metaphor poem that was started in class today.

April 22, Wednesday.  Students are to write a 10 line poem with an extended metaphor.  This poem is based on our reading of "Mother to Son" by Langston Hugehes.

April 21, Tuesday.  Students must turn in poetry assignment, art component and persuasive letter tomorrow, April 22.  Poetry should include rough drafts of I am poem, ABC poem and double voice poem, final copy of their best poem and the rubric.  Art component should be stapled to the rubric and persuasive letter should include a rough draft, final copy and the rubric.  We begin the poetry unit Wednesday.

 April 20, Monday.  Students should continue working on poetry assignment, art assignment and persuasive letter.  All components should be completed for collection on April 22, Wednesday.

April 14, Tuesday.  All research papers due tomorrow 4/15.  2 to 4 pages- 12 pt. font, double spaced, times new roman font.  Powerpoint presentations will be completed tomorrow.  Poetry, art, persuasive letter will all be due April 22- Next Wednesday. 

April 6, Monday and April 7, Tuesday.  Continue working on Powerpoint, Research Paper and Works Cited page ( 3 citations in MLA format).  Powerpoint is to be 6 slides.  Research paper is to be 2 to 4 pages with works cited page.  Research paper is to be typed in 12 pt. font, times new roman font.  Final copy of Research paper due 4/15.   

 

April 1, Wednesday.  Complete first draft for peer edit and grammar edit tomorrow.  Friday will be computer lab tying up loose ends on Powerpoint, Research Papers and Works Cited page.

March 31, Tuesday.  Review your work for completion of your first draft on Wednesday and your peer edit and grammar edit on Thursday.  

March 30, Monday.  Review your work for first draft.  Tomorrow will be your final day with class time to work on this first draft of the research paper.  Peer edit of first draft on Thursday.   

March 27, Friday.  Bring letter for first draft.  Review your notes

March 26, Thursday.  Review research for first draft on Friday.  We will read through an example of a research paper.  You should look over your research and try to find ways to group your information for the first draft of your research paper.  Keep in mind that you need 3 sources to use for your 3 MLA citations (citationbuilder.com).  Bring a #2 pencil for Blue Diamond test tomorrow.

March 25, Wednesday.  Review research for first draft on Friday.  We will examine an example of a well-written research paper, but you must have the facts, details and statistics on your subject to begin your paper.  Don't forget to keep website names and book titles for your citations.

 

March 24, Tuesday.  Review sample research questions and compare these questions with the information that you gathered yesterday.  As you look over these questions try to decide what area/s  you need to focus on for your research Wednesday and Thursday.

March 23, Monday.  Review summaries for Anne Frank play- Unit test tomorrow.  Be sure to have all vocabulary words for your open-note vocabulary test tomorrow also.

March 20, Friday.  Review topics for research to prepare for our research on Monday.  Review theme worksheet and lotus diagram for Anne Frank Test on Tuesday.  After the comprehension test, there will be an open-note vocab test.  BOOK PROJECT DUE MONDAY

 

March 19, Thursday.  Complete theme worksheet for review on Thursday.  Review this and the Lotus diagram as a review for the Anne Frank Test on Thursday.  Book Project due 3/23...Pop up book with 3 pages (summary, problem/solution and setting).  The projects I have seen so far have been very good- Looking forward to seeing these completed.

March 6, Friday.  Book Project due 3/23.  3 Page pop up book due Monday, March 3.  I just returned from a seminar in Charlotte where I got to hear testimonies from liberators in the US Armed Forces for WWII and Holocaust Survivors.   It was moving and I cannot wait to share this information with the students.   We are working to bring a survivor to see our students this spring.  

March 4, Wednesday.  Complete summaries for Act I scenes 1 and 2.  Book project due 3/23.

Review unit 1,2 and 3 definitions for quiz on Thursday 10/9.  Review short stories: "Flowers for Algernon", "A Retrieved Reformation" and "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" for TEST on Tuesday.  Get warm ups together for 9/22 through 10/3.  These warm ups will be collected Monday.  Book Project due 10/24, so we will have a book project process check on Monday.  Bring your book and some ideas about how you want to present the book for your project.
