Wednesday, December 3rd will be our last day covering soil properties. Students have been learning much about organic materials in soil, macro-nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, color, horizon profile, infiltration, soil temperature, structure, consistency, texture, particle size, pH, fertility, and soil moisture. They have also looked at how we can keep from destroying Earth’s lithosphere by taking measures to control human impact through growing native plants, crop rotation, wind breaks, contour plowing to name a few. Students also studied the great Dust Bowl, of the 1930’s which carried much topsoil away from the Midwest to the
December Science:
So, we have a new and exciting unit I’ll be covering this month on Energy. Students will begin investigations on energy transfer and transformations. We’ll be covering many topics such as convection, and radiation. Students will analyze heat flow through materials and across space from warm objects to colder objects until both objects are at equilibrium. We will also analyze sound as an example that vibrating materials generate waves that transfer energy. We will specifically look at frequency, amplitude, and loudness. Also, to be covered is how sound travels through different materials. The form and function of the human ear will also be learned by each student. Students will also evaluate data for qualitative and quantitative relationships associated with energy transfer, and transformation. The physical interactions of light and matter will be performed as students learn about absorption, scattering, color perception, and the form and function of the human eye. We will also perform labs on conduction, expansion, and contraction. Finally, your child will analyze the Law of Conservation of Energy. We are going to have a busy month of teaching and learning. We have a lot of exciting hands-on and minds-on labs ahead as we venture into the world of Energy Systems.
