Daniels Word of the Week 2011-2012

4.9
succinct
brief and to the point
SUCCINCT is this week’s Word! Succinct means to use few but, clear details to give the listener or reader a clear image of what you’re saying. A synonym would be concise. Hmmm…would you say succinct is similar or different from summary?
adjective

4.16
summarize
to briefly and concisely review the main points of something
Does anyone ever ask you to write a summary? What is that exactly? Luckily, SUMMARIZE is our Word of the Week. Summarzing is telling a story while leaving all the details out – you focus only on the main points. Sometimes we call that “putting things in a nutshell.” You know how small half of a nutshell is -- it wouldn’t hold very much at all, would it? Well, the nutshell is a metaphor for a summary-- which should be brief and including only what’s really important! How can you use the term, summarize in all of your classes?
verb

4.23
support
provide evidence
When someone asks you to SUPPORT your position, what they are asking you to do is to give them some valid reasons for what you want to do. Hmmmm, what does valid mean? In other words, you argue for it or uphold it. If you want your parents to let you stay up later on a school night, you’d better be prepared to support your request with reasons why. That’s the Word of the Week: SUPPORT.
verb

4.30
synthesize
to combine into a whole
A suffix is 2-3 letters at the end of the word that will a-ffect its meaning. The suffix “ize” means to make or do & the definition of synthesize is to make or form by combining parts. Did you synthesize this explanation?
verb

5.7
tactic
strategy
Have you considered your TACTIC for excelling on the EOGs? TACTIC is this week’s word, and it means strategy. Will you tackle the easier questions first and come back to the hard ones? Will you check every ten questions to be sure you have bubbled correctly? What TACTICS will you use to be successful?noun

5.14
trace
follow,track outline, list in steps

Here’s this week’s Word: TRACE. What does that mean? Well, on the test if the question asks you to trace the events leading up to something, what you need to look for is an answer that will list the order of events that led up to it. Sometimes we call that putting things in chronological order or sequencing. You go from the first thing that happened to the last.

verb
5.21

EOG TESTING – NO WOW
5.28
transition
movement from one thing to another

Movement or change from one position to another is TRANSITION and it is this week’s Word! If you transition from middle to high school, what are you doing? Think all of the ways this word could be used in EACH of your classes and keep a tally this week.

noun
6.4
verify
prove

For the last year, we’ve been examining Words, 1 per week. Would you verify this to be true? Guess what – VERIFY is this week’s Word! It means to prove the truth with evidence or to confirm. Think about this, would confirm be considered a synonym or antonym to verify? Can you verify what you’ve learned from reviewing these words each week?
