Summer 2009


Dear Students,


Welcome to Belen! I hope you are having a great summer! I look forward to meeting you all in August and teaching you. You are starting a new journey in your life that is exciting and enriching. Soon enough, you will be making many new friends and learning various interesting things about the world and your life. Let us join this journey together.


You should be purchasing your texts over the summer.  Also, in case that you are in the process of getting school supplies, I am including the following list for my class (this way, your parents could hopefully avoid long lines in office supply stores).  These will be due as a HW Grade on Friday, September 4th, but you will be expected to have paper and a pen by the first day of school:
  • Text, Bible & St. Ignatius (see below & make sure to label these with Permanent Marker on the front cover and on the opposite side of the spine (name & last name) and also cover them with clear contact paper (for durability--your text in particular is very flimsy and it breaks very easily):  30 Points (cover= 5 points (15 pts total) 
  • A binder (which you may share with other subjects) with 2 dividers and plenty of lined paper: 10 points
  • A Religion Folder (Plastic--they are durable): 5 Points
  • Number 2 Pencils (at least 2) and a good eraser (not a red one) : 10 Points  
  • A Sharpener that has a receptacle to catch pencil shavings.: 5 Points
  • Black or Blue Ink Pens (at least 3): 10 Points
  • White Out: 5 Points
  • A Flash Drive (It does not have to be more than 1GB & if another subject requires it, you can simply use it for both):10 Points 
  • 2 Highlighters: 5 points
  • Coloring Utensils (Crayons, Markers or Colored Pencils): 5 Points

Required Texts:
Faith First: Grade 6

• Faith First Grade 6 (Paperback)--(ISBN 0782909280)This text must be new. It is relatively inexpensive.  I saw it in Amazon.com for $13.10 (NEW). No used versions will be acceptable (No EXCEPTIONS). Also, it must be WRAPPED IN CONTACT PAPER WITH YOUR NAME PLACED UNDER THE CONTACT PAPER. This type of binding is necessary since it is the only binding that will hold the book together for the year. Plus, your name will be forever engraved under plastic.
The Catholic Youth Bible Revised: New American Bible

• The Catholic Youth Bible (no other Bibles will be permitted even if they are Catholic--this is a department policy): Please write your name on the cover & the opposite side of the spine in large letters using permanent marker (FIRST AND LAST NAME). It is important that you realize that this text is used from 6th-12th grade and that it would be best if you purchase the hardcover Bible (even if it costs more) so that you may preserve it until 12th Grade (however, that is up to you and your parents to decide). If you misplace it, it will be extremely hard to find if you do not label it.

Saint Ignatius and the Company of Jesus  by August Derleth (ISBN 0-89870-722-6) We will be using this book in September. I saw it at Barnes & Noble for $9.95 (You may order it online from them as well).
