LACROSSE RESEARCH ACTIVITY

Begin by searching for information on the internet on lacrosse, specifically the history of the sport, the development of it into today’s game, and cultures, groups, and individuals who have played the sport.  Collect information that you find, making sure you site your sources (just write down the webpage or book title) as you go along.

DO NOT CUT/PASTE FROM THE INTERNET- that is plagiarism.  Also, do NOT use wikipedia.com- not a valid research website.

4th Quarter

Unit 1

Lacrosse

Day 9 Thursday May 7: Final day of unit. We will be working on all the skills learned throughout the unit to see what we have. I will be assessing your progression over the entire Lacrosse unit.  Make sure you turn in (email or hand in during class) your Lacrosse Research Essay by Friday May 8th!!!!!!!

Day 8 Tuesday May 5: RAIN OUT!!! Rain forced us in today so we worked in the Wellness Center.  We also completed the first of our "Physical Fitness Post Tests" for this year - Curl-ups.  Over the next couple of weeks we will complete the Post-tests to determine your growth and improvement from the Fitness Testing we completed in August. I will be able to share with you your test scores from August this week.... FOCUS- If this was your "PE EOG" test how would you score?

Day 7 Friday May 1: Games continue.  We will have all classes using the Lacrosse regulation goals in games.  FOCUS- "Modify/Adjust to improve"  What can you and or your team do to improve a situation or event that is occuring in your game that is not successful?  How does this translate to your life as well?

Day 6 Wednesday April 29: Games will begin today.  FOCUS- Facilitators will be involved during game play to help keep the game going forward and the conflict to a minimum.

Day 5 Monday April 27:

Day 4 Thursday April 23:

Day 3 Tuesday April 21: Students will apply the scooping and cradling skills to small sided games involvin possession and passing skills in conjunction with scoop/cradle.

Day 2 Friday April 17: Scoop and Cradle.  Students will review cues to scooping "3 P's" Push-Pull-Perpendicular and cradling "Shoulder-to-shoulder" and "Face-to-face".  FOCUS= can you defy gravity??? Centripetal force is our focus when we are discussing force application in PE.  Students will participate in "scoop offs"

Day 1 Wednesday April 15: Introduction.  Students will be provided a brief history of the sport along with a demonstration of the stick.  Students will explore their "handedness" to determine if they play right or left handed.  FOCUS: 2 most important skills = Scoop & Cradle.  Students will explore scooping and cradling in class.

Spring Break: Be safe and have FUN!!!

Unit 2 Soccer

Thursday March 26: Soccer games continue. Teams will play a minimum of three games today. Students will continue to TRACE the field, ANALYZE their teams play, and FORMULATE a game plan for each game.

Tuesday March 24: Soccer games begin.  Students will be put into teams of 4-6 to begin playing games.  FOCUS- students will need to apply the skills and strategies we have learned through all the activities and drills we participated in to be successful during game play.  We will review the most basic and important rules of soccer to enable us to play the games.

Friday March 20: Capture the Cone: Students will continue to work on the concrete top due to the wet field/weather.  We are playing a small-sided game that enables students to implement offensive and defensive skills in association with strategy for a "modified soccer game".  FOCUS- Create a game plan or strategy for your team to use. Q1- does every team use the same strategy?  Q2- if your strategy/game plan is not working what do you do?

Wednesday March 18: Defense, Defense, Defense: Students will practice defense play to explore the most effective ways to defend the opposite team.  FOCUS- Disruption is another word for Defense.  Q- how can you disrupt the player with the ball without having to steal it and gain possession?

Monday March 18: Force Production and Elevation of Soccer ball: Students explored the necessary application of force to propell the soccer ball across the field to their partner so as long as they didn't exceed the amount of force that caused the ball to go further than the distance between them and their partner.  FOCUS- elevelation of the ball requires you to strike the ball on the upswing and underneath the ball to get it into the air. Remember to apply the appropriate amount of force so that your partner can still catch/maintain possession.

Thursday March 12: Passing, Catching, Dribbling: We have learned these 3 most important skills.  Now we are going to put them to use in a variety of activities and games to prepare us for playing the game of soccer.

Tuesday March 9: Dribble group: students will explore dribbling the ball through traffic and around individuals while maintaining possession.  FOCUS- use your peripheral vision as you travel around the space.  Remember to maintain control of the ball as you change directions, stop, and start dribbling.

UNIT 1 JUGGLING

Thursday Feb 26th: JUGGLING TEST DAY. Students will continue to demonstrate skills for juggling 3 objects (balls or scarfs). Mr. Maloney will test each student individually during class.  Do your best :)

Tuesday Feb 24th: Day 8 Students will have 2 more days to get to juggling objects.  You worked through stations the past two days, how can you apply those pieces to create your completed "Juggling Puzzle"? FOCUS- Practice, Practice, Practice and keep working towards your goal!

Friday Feb 20th: Day 7 Students will rotate through the 6 stations again to explore the individual skills that each station focuses on.  FOCUS- don't "think"!  Remember that we are learning new skills so we want to "PLAN & DO".  Try not to think about what you are doing.  Also, remember the individual skills that are present at each station are going to be put together to help you juggle 3 objects (tennis balls or juggling scarfs).  HOMEWORK!!!! You are to juggle 15-20 minutes over the weekend. If you don't have tennis balls roll up socks that have mass that can replace the balls. ASK PERMISSION BEFORE YOU JUGGLE INSIDE!

Wednesday Feb 18th: Day 6 Students will rotate through 6 stations working on different skills for juggling.  Some stations will be a review of earlier learned skills while other stations will challenge students to learn new skills.  FOCUS- students should look at the individual skills for the stations and observe how the many pieces of the "juggling puzzle" are put together.

Friday Feb 13th: Day 5 Students will begin to explore using 3 objects if they are read.  Students who can juggle 2 objects without "thinking" can try 3. You will use the "throw and roll" technique using 2 balls and one hand to get you started.  Remember your wall test and sound test when juggling 2 or 3 objects. FOCUS- what are you doing that is helping you progress to 3 balls? What can you improve upon today?

Wednesday Feb 11th: Day 4 We will continue to work with 2 tennis balls (or scarfs if you prefer) to continue building our "2nd story".  Students who did not complete their Juggling Self-Assessment on Monday will complete theirs in class on Wednesday. 4 criteria to evaluate yourself= consistency, "X", height, and waste.  FOCUS= How are you putting together a solid foundation (1 ball) with your extension (2 balls) to better enable you to juggle 3 objects???  PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.....

Monday Feb 9th: Day 3 students will complete a self-assessment on their current level of juggling. Students will identify their current strengths, their area of need, and create a plan for success for the remainder of the unit.  FOCUS= What do you do well? And "I would juggle even better if....?"

Thursday Feb 5th: Day 2 students will review the cues for juggling using 1 scarf. As students become comfortable with 1 scarf, 2 scarfs will be introduced.  We will discuss how the need to "cross-brain" thinking will be required.  Students will then experiment with a different size, mass, and density object (tennis ball) and it's relationship with gravity.

Tuesday Feb 3rd: Day 1 students will discuss and explore the relationship between mass and gravity.  Students will experiment the effects of gravity on objects of differing mass, shapes, and density.  We will begin with a "juggling scarf" and explore ways to maintatin control. FOCUS- Cross-brain activity. QUESTION= How does your brain work with your hands/coordination?
