Language Arts
Reviewing all letters and sounds

This program teaches kids to read, write, and spell. The Zoo-phonics Program teaches the alphabet using a cast of Animal characters and sounds, and a body movement that directly relates to the Animal/Letter, allowing children to utilize the alphabet immediately.

HOUGHTON MIFFLIN READING-
recognizing upper and lowercase letters.

Popcorn Words are words that keep "popping up" around us. They are high frequency words that are repeated often in books and print. These words will help us to be more fluent readers and writers.
Your child has these words in their work folder.  Please take a few minutes each night to work on reading and spelling them.
Return them to the folder so that new words can be added from time to time.

BOOK AND PRINT AWARENESS

Talk with your child about punctuation- period, question mark, exclamation mark-
-Front/Back of the book-
-The Title-
-Where to begin reading on each page-
-The correct directionality of reading-left to right-
-The difference in a word and a letter-
-The difference in an uppercase and lowercase letter-
All of these skills were  a part of the first quarter DRA assessment that I did with your child .  The little readers that come home are a great place to begin. Also talk about "picture" reading to help with story content.
All sounds will continue to be assessed as well as letter recognition for those letters we have studied in depth.

I will be doing 3rd quarter assessments soon in preparation for report cards.

Remember to read nightly with your child.
Record the books in the orange reading log. Children who reach their goal of 10 books per month, will receive a Pizza Hut coupon.
Check homework assignments for the week in agenda on Monday. Please return homework each day and your child will place it in the homework basket.

Writing-
Remember the writing rules
1. capital letters at the beginning of sentences
2. end punctuation
3. drawing with character and setting; details
4. Use popcorn words
5. Sound out words you do not know how to spell
6. Write 2 or more sentences

We are getting reading for the writing test on March 5.
Write on!
