CP English III

Our first unit will cover the colonization of America and the literature of that period. Most of the literature during this period is non-fiction. This unit includes a poster project on Native American Myths and cultural information on Native American tribes. There is a unit test at the end of this unit. Part will be matching and part will be essay answers. Students will write a persuasive editorial at the end of this unit.

Following is a list of the readings during this unit.
Native American Myths
"A Narrative of the Captivity" Mary Rolandson
"Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" Jonathan Edwards
The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano
"Speech to the Virginia Convention" Patrick Henry
The Crisis No. 1  Thomas Paine
The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin

Students will first read these selections on their own at night for homework. A few directed study guide questions will be posted for each reading assignment on the English III Reading Assignments page. Students will answer these questions in a required Composition Book or Spiral Notebook. Each assignment must be properly labeled with the page numbers so credit may be given for the work. These are the questions I will be focusing on for the class discussion on the reading. By reading the material and answering these questions, every student will be able to participate in our class discussions. We will not read the selections out loud in class. Most students derive greater enjoyment by reading on their own.

The second unit will cover Romanticism 1800 -1860

This will begin shortly after the first progress report on September 29th.
