Congratulations Herbert Sasser
NEJ Regional Reading Fair Winner

Congratulations to Mr. Herbert Sasser, Northeast Jones 8th grade middle school student.  Herbert recently placed 1st at the District Reading Fair and then 3rd at the Southern Regional Reading Fair in the Individual Non-Fiction Division M category for his Robert E. Lee and the Road of Honor storyboard. He picked Robert E. Lee as a subject, the Virginia native because Herbert himself lived in Virginia for three years. The Southern Regional Reading Fair was held February 17th at the Hattiesburg Lake Terrace Convention Center. Herbert was the only Jones county student to place at the Southern Regional Reading Fair. He was very excited and honored to represent NEJ and Jones County. Congratulations on a job well done!

National Storytelling Week

During February’s National Storytelling Week, Ms. Leighan Griffin, the Northeast Jones Middle School Media Specialist, held a special activity for Ms. Karen Fitzgerald and Ms. Michelle Pryor’s 7th grade reading classes as part of her on-going efforts to promote reading at NEJ.

Griffin setup a storytelling string activity for the reading classes. The activity required students to incorporate items on a string making up a story that included all the elements and basic plot structure. At the end of each class, the groups presented their stories.

The Society for Storytelling created National Storytelling Week in 2001 as an annual event to highlight the art of storytelling.
