Conferences may be scheduled with the Rhino team teachers Monday-Friday 9:45-10:15. Due to the difficulty in reaching us during school hours, we ask that you email us with your conference requests and/or questions. If you prefer, you may leave a message for us at 233-4228.

If your student has lost his/her Social Studies textbook, the replacement cost is $52.66.  Checks should be made payable to Dillard Drive Middle School. Textbooks were collected last Thursday.

Homework for 6/3: Use the map on "The Demilitarized Zone" to answer questions 1-4.  TEXTBOOKS WILL BE COLLECTED TOMORROW.  BRING YOURS FROM HOME!

Homework for Monday, June 1: Fill in the blanks on your East Asia map and color it by elevation.  Due tomorrow.  In addition, for Core 4, since we had the PBS reward during class time, read Ch. 22 -1 and Ch. 23-1 and take the quiz as you read.

Homework for Friday, 5/29: No homework, but Monday, 6/1, is the last day that late work will be accepted.

Homework for Thursday, 5/28: "Match the Proverbs" that share a meaning.

Homework for Wednesday, 5/27: Read the excerpts from the ANALECTS of Confucius and answer the 3 questions.  Do the Chinese language wordsearch on the other side.

Homework for Tuesday, 5/26:  Finish the Ch. 2o crossword puzzle begun in class.  If you trust the others in your group to do their shares, just complete your section.  If your group is unlikely to act responsibly, you might want to do more.  You will have a few minutes tomorrow to exchange answers.

Homework for Thursday, 5/14: Get your interim signed.  Study for tomorrow's map quiz (no capitals).  Your map is to be colored by elevation.  If you did not finish "Geography and the Vietnam War" in class, complete the 6 questions.  Finally, a reminder: tomorrow is the last day to turn in the $5/letter for Japan Day.

Homework for Wednesday, 5/13: Read pgs. 624-627 and answer the Ch. 24-2 questions.  Friday is the last day to turn in the permission form and $5 for Japan Day.  I have extra copies of the form if you need one.

Homework for Tuesday, 5/12: Do your test corrections and get your test signed by a parent.  Tomorrow is the last day for missing/late work.  The Ch. 24-1 questions will be collected.

Homework for Monday, 5/11: Read pgs. 616-623 in your textbook.  Complete the back of the map sheet before class tomorrow, and answer the Ch. 24-1 questions for Wednesday.  Students took the South Asia unit test today- tests will be returned tomorrow.  There may be some classtime allotted to test corrections, with any remaining corrections to be done as homework.  Tests (not the corrections!) must be signed by a parent for corrections to count.

Homework for Thursday, 5/7: Find any missing work.  Work on your study guide terms.   I will be attending my son's graduation tomorrow so do not turn anything in to the sub.  If you have your letter/money for Japan Day, Mrs. Owens will take care of it.

Homework for Wednesday, 5/6: Read the articles in the Gandhi packet.  Complete the Word Match for "Gandhi: Man of Peace".  The word search is just for fun.  Answer the 2 questions at the end of the introductory paragraph of"Why India Must Be Free" after you read Gandhi's letters.  Answer the 2 questions on the back of "Gandhi's 'Quit India' Speech".

Homework for Tuesday, 5/5: Read pgs. 546-550 and answer the questions for Ch.21-2. Be sure to read the notes on the the questions page.  The test for the South Asia unit will be given on Monday, 5/11.  It will cover chapters 19 and 21.  Study Guide Terms were distributed on April 28.  Optional study guides using those terms will be collected on the day of the test.

Homework for Monday, 5/4: Using the information in Ch. 19, sections 2 and 3, create a Venn diagram, chart, or double-bubble map comparing and contrasting Hinduism and Buddhism.  You MAY NOT use a homework pass on this assignment!

Homework for Tuesday, 3/31: Begin work on the take-home test for Chapters 6 & 7.  Use the textbook, your notes, your parents, or an older sibling for help, but do not call a friend!  The test is due on Friday, but may be turned in earlier.

Homework for Monday, 3/30:Use pgs. 180-185 to identify the terms for section 3 of Ch. 7.   The take-home test will be handed out tomorrow, and must be returned no later than this Friday.  Beginning on Wednesday, Rhino students will work on the required (by WCPSS) Social Studies essay.  Research will be done on Wednesday, a first draft on Thursday, and, following peer editing, a final draft will be completed on Friday.  WHAT A WEEK!!

Homework for Friday, 3/27: If you did not finish the Ch. 7-2 questions in class, finish them.  All missing assignments must be turned in by Monday.  Next Tuesday, students will be given a take-home test.  Students may use books, notes, assistance from parents.  The test is to be returned by Friday, 4/3.

Homework for Wednesday, 3/18: Use pgs. 142-150 to find information for the 12 terms listed so far for "Ch. 6 People, Places, and Terms to Know" - Judaism, Abraham, Canaan, Hebrews, Exodus, Israelites, Israel/Judah, Diaspora, monotheism, Torah, synagogue, and rabbis.  The Ch. 5 test was taken today and will be returned tomorrow for parent signature.  This test was open-notebook so no corrections will be allowed.

Homework for Tuesday, 3/17: Study for tomorrow's test on Chapter 5. 

Homework for Monday, 3/16 - Most students completed finding the terms and answering the questions for Ch. 5-4 in class.  If you didn't finish, be sure to have the questions completed as they  will be checked in class for a classwork grade.  Complete your timeline using the dates in sections 3 and 4 of Chapter 5.  If an example would be useful, check pg. 138.         PARENT ALERT: the Chapter 5 test will be given on Wednesday - students should study their "People, Places, and Terms to Know" pages and review the questions sheets.

Homework for Thursday, 3/12: Core 1 - Finish the Ch. 5-3 questions.  Cores 2,3, and 4 - Try the cuneiform/ Babylonian math sheet.  Don't spend more than 15 minutes per side.

Homework for Wednesday, 3/11: Beginning at 10,000B.C.E. and ending at 500 B.C.E., construct a timeline for Mesopotamia.  Use all the dates in section 1 and 2 of Chapter 5.  More dates will be added later.

Homework for Tuesday, 3/10: Read pgs. 122-126 in the textbook, writing the definitions of city-state, empire, polytheism, priests, and social hierarchy as you read.  Then answer the questions for Ch. 5-2.

Homework for Monday, 3/9: Read pgs. 116-121 in the textbook, writing the definitions of Mesopotamia, Fertile Crescent, silt, irrigation, canals, surplus, and division of labor on your "People, Places & Terms to Know" sheet as you find them.  Then answer the questions on the Ch. 5-1 handout.

Homework for Thursday, 3/5: Finish decorating your sarcophagus and complete the framed paragraph.  The sarcphagus will be cut out and the paragraph attached in class.

Homework for Wednesday, 3/4: Read pgs. 298-303 in your textbook, then use what you read to write an acrostic poem EGYPTIAN ACHIEVEMENTS.  Today in class students did the basic work on their saarcophagi.  Each sarcophagus must include the student's name in hieroglyphs, the student's regular name on the back in ink, and 3 sets of Egyptian numerals, one set for the student's date of birth, a set for the date s/he began to reign as "Pharaoh", and a date for the Pharaoh's death.  Students were shown how to cut the paper bag, how to do the body to head proportion, and how to do the basic sarcophagus shape.  Most started the basic drawing in class.  Each sarcophagus is to be about the student and his/her interests, and is to be decorated appropriately with marker, crayon, colored pencils, or paint - whatever you have available.  If there are no materials available, the student should see me during class tomorrow - I'll lend colored pencils or markers overnight on Thursday.  Sarcophagi are due on Friday, 3/6.

Homework for Tuesday, 3/3: Read pgs. 291-297 and complete the Ch. 11-3 outline.  Bring your brown paper grocery bag tomorrow - we'll start our sarcophagi in class.

Homework for Friday, 2/27: Get a large brown PAPER bag (or 2) if you go to the grocery store over the weekend.  We'll be making sarcophagi next week: the date depends on how the weather turns out on Monday.

Homework for Thursday, 2/26: Use the infor on the front of the "Hieroglyphs" sheet to translate the clues.  Then complete the crossword puzzle.  Next week your student will need a brown paper grocery bag for a project: if you go to the grocery store this weekend, ask for one.

Homework for Wednesday, 2/25: Complete the Egyptian numeral problems begun in class.  Then write and solve an Egyptian numeral problem of your own.

Homework for Thursday, 2/12: Write a 3 paragraph essay about the Aswan High Dam.  Explain the good things about the dam in the first paragraph, the bad things in the second, and for the third, explain why you think the dam should have been built ot not. 

Homework for Wednesday, 2/11: Read pages 361-366 n the textbook and answer the questions on the Ch. 14-3 sheet.   This assignment is due on Monday.

Homework for Tuesday, 2/10: Read "The Rise and Spread of Islam in North and East Africa" and answer the questions on the back.  For Cores 1, 2, and 3, there will be a homework quiz for this and Monday's homework combined.  Because of tomorrow's pep rally during Core 4, the assignments will be collected and graded as a quiz.

Homework for Monday, 2/9: Read "North Africa Until the 7th Century" and answer the questions on the back.  This will be paired with tomorrow's homework for a homework quiz on Wednesday.

Homework for Friday, 2/6: Complete the questions for "Alexander the Great".  Have a great weekend!

Homework for Monday, 2/2: Read "Swimming in the Sahara" and write an "I Am" poem by completing the phrases on the back of the page.  One or two words per phrase is NOT ENOUGH!!!

Homework for Friday, 1/30: Get the pink copy of your report card signed and return it in the brown envelope.  Most cores began "Desertification/ 'Desert creep'..."in class.  Even if your class didn't begin this class assignment, finish it at home.  This is for a classwork grade so you can't use a homework pass.  It shouldn't take more than 20 minutes.

Homework for Thursday, 1/29: Study for tomorrow's North Africa map quiz.  Make sure you have colored your map by elevation.

Homework for Wednesday, 1/28: Read the passage about the formation of deserts, "Recognizing Cause and Effect", and find the effects.

Homework for Tuesday, 1/27: Finish "The Sahara Desert" reading and questions , and get a good night's sleep before tomorrow's writing test.  The North Africa map quiz will be on Friday.

Homework for Friday, 1/23: Clear out your binder but do not get rid of anything until you have received your report card on the 30th.  We will begin the North Africa unit on Tuesday.

Homework for Thursday, 1/22: Finish the final draft of your research paper.  It should be double-spaced whether typed or handwritten.  Be sure to include paragraphs about the 2 think-about-it questions, and a concluding paragraph, as well as "works cited" information.  Tomorrow I will also collect your research notes and outline.  Please staple all three items together and make sure your name is on each sheet.

Homework for Friday, 1/16: Use the outline info given in class today as the format for your rough draft due on Tuesday.  Double space to allow for easier editing in class.

Homework for Thursday, 1/15: Make sure that you have matched notes to the numbers of questions - you will have 20 minutes to make a chart with your fellow researchers.  In addition, tomorrow in class you will be doing the outline for your paper with the first draft due on 1/20 unless another arrangement has been reached with me.

Homework for Wednesday, 1/14: Same as yesterday!  Tomorrow is the last day to research your disease.

Homework for Tuesday, 1/13: Match up the questions on your project sheet with the notes you took in class.  Write the # of the question next to the appropriate note(s).

Homework for Monday, 1/12:PARENT ALERT!!!  This week students will be doing research on African diseases.  Be prepared for comments about the truly gross and/or deadly disease that your student was assigned.  This is not a group project: students are responsible for taking notes individually but resources will be shared with others researching the same disease.  Research will be conducted in class tomorrow, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Students who wish to research at home online may do so but must give me a downloaded copy of any article they use (not all sources are reliable!).  On Friday, students will practice doing an outline.  The first draft will be due on Tuesday, 1/20.  Today in class we practiced some research skills including note-taking.  Homework for tonight is to write the questions that their Cornell notes answer for our practice topic, AIDS, one of Africa's deadliest diseases.  The notes were taken from an online article published by the Mayo Clinic.

Homework for Friday, 1/9: NONE!!!

Homework for Thursday, 1/8: Read "My Return to South Africa", written by Dennis Brutus in 1991 before the end of apartheid.  Write a 3-paragraph essay explaining what his return would be like if he went back to South Africa now:  one paragraph on the changes in the country, one paragraph on what has remained the same, and one paragraph on what changes need to be made.  This is the last assignment for the Southern Africa test equivalent - tomorrow is the last day to turn in all 11.

Homework for Wednesday, 1/7: Read pgs. 448-451 and complete Parts B and C for Ch. 18-3.

Homework for Tuesday. 1/6: Read "Desmond Tutu" and answer questions 1 and 2.  Then read the excerpt from Nelson Mandela's autobiography LONG WALK TO FREEDOM.  Use context clues to match the 8 terms to their definitions.

Homework for Monday, 1/5: Read "South Africa, Part 2" and answer questions 1-10.  There WILL be a homework quiz tomorrow.  Finish any work not completed in class.

NO HOMEWORK OVER WINTER BREAK - SOME STUDENTS WILL DO MAKEUP WORK.  HAVE A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY !

Homework for Thursday, 12/18: Complete the "Apartheid Packet".  It's easy to overlook the fact that you need to write a paragraph or two after reading the poem about Soweto.

Homework for Wednesday, 12/17: Write the questions and page summaries for the Cornell notes on "Apartheid".  This assignment is worh as much as 10 points on the test equivalent.   Bring a 42 cent postage stamp tomorrow.  We will be sending season's greetings to wounded soldiers recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.  Extra stamps would be appreciated as some students will forget to bring one.

Homework for Tuesday, 12/16: Read "South Africa, Part 1" and answer questions 1-11.  This assignment is for a quiz grade.

Homework for Monday, 12/15: Read pgs. 440-445 (Ch. 18-2). Write 10 history questions and 10 culture questions and answer them.  These must be turned in by Friday, but the sooner the better.  At the very least, read the material (in case of a pop quiz). 

Homework for Friday, 12/12: Due on Monday from earlier this week - Southern Africa map colored by elevation, Ch. 18-1 Questions pages.  Study for the map quiz to be given on Monday - no capitals.

Homework for Thursday, 12/11:  Read "Namibia's Skeleton Coast" and answer questions 1 & 2.  Get your interims signed and return them tomorrow. 

Homework for Wednesday, 12/10: Color your Southern Africa map by elevation.

Homework for Tuesday, 12/9: Read the N & O article "Chimp refuge seeks to save waning species" and answer the 2 questions.  Classwork and homework from Monday are due tomorrow which is also the last day that I will accept any late or  missing work.

Homework for Monday. 12/8: Finish your take-home test and check your answers.  If you were unable to take the test at home, reread Chapters 12 and 16.  The work begun in class today is due on Wednesday.

Homework for Friday, 12/5: If you got your letter signed, work on the take-home test.  If you didn't get it signed, have your parent sign it and bring it to class on Monday so you can get a copy of the test to do at home Monday night.

Homework for Thursday, 12/4: Match proverbs to their American counterparts in "African Proverbs". 

Homework for Wednesday, 12/3: Have a parent read and sign the letter about the take-home test.

Homework for Tuesday, 12/2: Read "Sub-Saharan Civilizations: East Africa,       A.D. 1000-1600" and answer the questions on the back.  Don't be surprised if there's a homework quiz tomorrow.  ALERT: Look for a letter coming home tomorrow about the upcoming take-home test.
