WELCOME, RUBY TEAM!

Social Studies

In social studies class this year you will travel "Around The World In 180 Days".  You will journey deep into the Amazon Jungle, celebrate traditional Mexican holidays, discover Simba's trail in Africa, learn about the Great Wall of China, and climb to the very top of the tallest mountain chain in the world.

During the final marking period we will continue our journey around the world with an examination of Latin America (Mexico and Central America, the Caribbean, and South America).  Specific emphasis will be on the contributions of Ancient Americans including the Maya, Aztec, and Inca to modern Latin American culture, the European conquest of Latin America, the relationship between the U.S. and Mexico, and the political and cultural influence of Caribbean nations including Cuba and Puerto Rico.

Unit activities will include a persuasive writing assignment related to the Amazon Rainforest and a formal classroom debate on the preservation versus utilization of the resources of the Amazon.  Finally, as an end of the year service learning project, students on the Ruby Team and in the M.A.G.I.C. Club will be asked to donate used athletic equipment.  This equipment will be delivered to the New Britain Rock Cats, a minor league baseball team that works closely with Roberto's Kids.  This organization is a non-profit group that honors the memory of Roberto Clemente, the first Latino major league baseball player and perhaps one of the greatest humanitarians in the history of professional sports.  The donations will be sent to poverty stricken nations that are located primarily within the Caribbean.  They will be used by the children of these nations to enjoy the games that we all love to play.  All equipment will be accepted between now and the end of the school year.

Attention all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students....

Congratulations to the following recipients of the sixth annual Mr. Odierna Scholarship for Outstanding Community Service:

Ethan Gasta, Nicole Hollis, Mikey Liebman, Jacquelyn Mead, and Rebecca Surprenant

Applications for the 2009 Mr. Odierna Scholarship for Outstanding Community Service are available.  The scholarship program has been established to honor Mr. Odierna, a former 8th grade social studies teacher and the founder of the M.A.G.I.C. Club.  Mr. Odierna was also deeply committed to the organization of the annual 8th grade field trip to Washington, D.C.  The scholarship program is open to all 7th grade students.  The requirements of the scholarship are outlined in the application packet.  Students must provide a description of the community service activities that were completed along with adult verification of these activities.  Adult verification must be attached to the application packet in the form of a letter.  Additionally, interested students will need to write an essay related to their understanding of the importance of community service.  All 7th grade applicants will be considered.  The scholarship may be used to supplement the total cost of the 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C.  or it may be used as a savings bond.  The deadline for submission will be Friday, May 8th.  All applications should be completed and returned to Mr. Bean in room 233 by this date.

The 2008 Food Drive has concluded.  Students and staff members at Timothy Edwards Middle School have once again done a remarkable job.  This year, over 5,000 pounds of food was collected to support members of the Greater Hartford community who are at risk of going hungry during the coldest winter months of the year.  Great work TE!

The 2008 Food Drive is off to a great start.  All non-perishable food items will be accepted until Friday, December 19th.  The annual food drive benefits FoodShare of Greater Hartford.  Any and all support of this drive is greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to the following recipients of the fifth annual Mr. Odierna Scholarship for Outstanding Community Service:

Alani Bagcal, Sarah Himmelstein, David Labins, and Kyle Smith
