Assignments for the week of November 7 – November 10

Friday, November 11 is Veterans Day—Schools will be closed

 

HW (assigned on Thursday, 11/3) due on Wednesday, 11/9:  

1.      Read and study Chapter 5, “A Struggle for Independence,” pages 152-183.

2.      Complete Guided Reading Written Assignment

 MEMORIZATION ASSIGNMENT (assigned on Friday, November 4) due Friday, November 18

Directions:  Memorize the following preamble (introduction) of the Declaration of Independence. You will be required to write out the memorization as a test on the due date listed above. 

                When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

                We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.—   

HW 1: DUE THURSDAY, 11/10: Create a set of FLASH CARDS of the memorization to help with your memorization.

HW 2: DUE TUESDAY, 11/15:    Paraphrase each of the following sections of the Declaration into modern language.

1.  We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  

2.  But, when a long train of abuses and usurpations...evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right…to throw off such Government and to provide new Guards for their future security.  

3.  We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress assembled…solemnly publish and declare, that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be Free and Independence States…

4.  And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

 

Tuesday, 11/8:  JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT Session # 6—This is our final session.

Activity 6: What's the Risk:  Students demonstrate that life involves risk and that insurance helps to reduce the financial consequences of loss or injury.

 

Key Learning Objectives:  Students will be able to:

  • Identify financial risks.
  • Explain how insurance provides a method to minimize risk.
  • Identify the opportunity cost of having insurance.
