During October students will learn about the five senses with a focus on touch/skin. First grade classes will go on a field trip to Windham Hospital. (Our class goes on Oct.18th) Students will learn about staying healthy and the community workers that help us to do that at the hospital. During Fire Prevention week students will discuss fire safety at school and learn what they could do to stay safe in case of fire at  their home as well. Topics 2 and 3  in math will include concepts of addition, subtraction, time, measurement and place value. Expect activity suggestions to come in your child's red folder that will guide you in assisting your child in practicing these skills at home. Homelinks for Fundations will also be sent for Units 3 and 4. Students will continue practicing story structure using the Braidy character component model. We have been practicing writing complete sentences, including adding some detail to our work. Students will continue to edit for an uppercase letter to begin a sentence and correct punctuation. (These skills are practiced during Daily Oral Language as well.)  We'll continue on with our reading adventures, practicing sight words and developing fluency at each student's independent reading level. Your child will begin taking home a reading bookbag this month from the classroom. Have your child read the book to you in his/her bookbag each night and return it the next school day to trade for another. Reading practice at your child's ability level will help with fluency as will completing activities in the Fundations Homelink pack. I hope to see you on Curriculum Night, Oct.13th. Several UCONN interns are working with us in L.Arts and math. Please continue to review behavior expectations and responsibilities with your child. Remind them of the importance of being attentive, focused to task and a good listener for all learning experiences.
