MRS. BETSY FINNEY

7TH GRADE ELA TEACHER

"Shooting Stars" Team

WELCOME TO MY PAGE !!
******************
The 2011-2012 school year at CGMS has been wonderful so far! Students are thriving in their 7th grade environment. This is an amazing group of kids and it is such a pleasure to teach them! check this page to keep up with what we are doing in class. Thank you for your continued support!

Blocks 1, 2, & 3
We have started activities for the novel "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" by Mildred Taylor. After completing a web quest and a 4-corners activity, students will independently read the book 1-2 chapters at a time. After reading, students will participate in reading partnerships. In these collaborative teams, students will discuss chapters, develop questions, write double entry journals connecting with text, and maintain a character & conflict log.   After the novel, students will work with their partners on a RAFT project.

Block 4 (AIG)
The 7th grade AIG curriculum focuses on persuasion. The novels this year are specific to racial groups and their struggles to overcome obstacles caused by prejudice & change (these things are often caused by persuasion). As the AIG students continue to use the William & Mary curriculum, we have also been reading stories & poems associated with the concept of persuasion. Activities have included literature webs, vocabulary webs, speeches, essays, art, & lots of class discussions!

This AIG class will soon begin reading their next independent novel, The Diary of Anne Frank. They will be required to answer critical thinking questions on their own and we will have class discussions and projects designed to help students connect the novel with their own life experiences, as well as with other texts and ideas we have talked about in class so far this year.

Here is a complete list of the novels we will read this year: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry (already completed), Journey to Topaz (reading it now), Taking Sides, Anne Frank, Maus II, & Hiroshima.
I welcome any suggestions about activities and/or possible field trips this class could take which would support the curriculum!

All groups
EOGs will be here before we know it! Starting in January, we will use part of the class on Fridays to work on EOG skills. Students will read EOG passages using the UNRAAVEL & sentence summary strategies. We will discuss answers together. Students will also play games designed to help with EOG vocabulary and participate in partnerships and group activities to practice skills. We will continue to work on various skills in our daily warm-ups (so far we have worked on inferences, main idea, author's purpose, and drawing conclusions).

Reading Logs are due each week on Fridays, unless a different day or situation is specified by me in class. Late turn-in days are the following Monday (for 10 points off) or Tuesday (for 20 points off). After that, it is a zero. I do not take late reading logs after this point. However, I do accept late turn-ins for other assignments for late credit. Students must check with me if they want to turn in something late. Please encourage your child to turn in EVERYTHING! This is so important!
