MRS. BETSY FINNEY 8TH GRADE ELA TEACHER "SURVIVOR" TEAM WELCOME TO MY PAGE! Students have recently completed reading & activities for The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. On October 26th, in first block, Mr. Davis acted as the judge in a mock trial of Johnny Cade from The Outsiders. Mrs. Lambert also served as our bailiff! Students did a phenomenal job of planning and presenting their cases. In the end, Judge Davis determined that Johnny Cade was not guilty in the murder of Bob Sheldon. The trial was a huge success! Also, in second, third, and fourth block classes, students have created some amazing projects for the novel from skits and talk shows to graffiti walls and poetry. Great job everyone!! My AIG (first block) class will begin using the William & Mary curriculum in November. This unit focuses on the concept of Utopia. Students will be participating in a variety of activities, reading various types of literature, and studying art. I'm very excited to start a new program. The students are going to enjoy it and learn a lot! All other classes have started reading short stories. The first story we are reading is Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. This is a wonderful story about a man named Charlie who participates in an experimental operation to increase his intelligence. Charlie experiences a lot in his journey and finds out that being smart isn't the solution to all of his problems. Students will create their "perfect person" and work with inkblots. They will also maintain a double-entry journal as we read so they can connect Charlie's experiences with their own lives. We will continue with short stories throughout November. We continue to work with Word Skills every day. Students are steadily completing activities and learning new words! Hard work is paying off and it shows in quiz and test grades! Keep it up everyone! In addition to novels and other material we read in class, students are required to have a book from the media center at all times and should read independently as much as possible. We will have class in the media twice a month. STUDENTS: Please remember to ask for make up work if you are absent from school! It is YOUR responsibility to complete all missed work!! STUDENTS & PARENTS: **Late work turn-in policy: I will accept late work (for late credit) up to 2 days after the due date. If work is not received by that time, the grade will be a zero.**
**I offer 20 points of extra credit each quarter. Students may read short comprehension passages (located in the classroom and always accessible) and answer a few questions about them. There are 10 sheets, and each one is worth 2 points!! Extra credit points will be added to low test/quiz grades at the end of each quarter. Please take the time to do this extra credit!! It can only help you!! UPCOMING DATES TO REMEMBER: Veterans Day (holiday) - November 11th Early Release - November 24th Fall Break - November 25th-November 29th **Students can not be checked out from school after 3pm!
