Welcome to Second Grade!!!!
Mr. Hough

Beginning on November 2nd, the children will be bringing home a new assessment sheet.  This sheet will give you more information about how your child is behaving in class and how they are using their time wisely to complete assignments in class.  It will also show if they have completed and returned homework from the previous night.
Also, different children will be bringing home different homework and reading books.  It is important that the children are reading on their level at home, and the books they are bringing home should reflect that.

Please always check the calendar link.  I will put important dates and reminders there.

What we are learning in November

Reading:

Our focus lessons in reading have concentrated on different strategies that good readers use to decode and comprehend.

Our theme for November will be “community” and the stories we will read will be about things we do in our community.  The expected reading level at the end of the second nine weeks will be 19/20 with a retelling score of a 3.

Math:

We are using the new math program “Math Expressions”.  Children are learning how to add and subtract using the number 10 as a base.  Our next unit will be using different strategies to add 2 digit numbers.

Social Studies:

We will be learning about People and Cultures.  We will discuss and explore how cultures from around the world are alike and different.

Science:

We will learn about sounds and how sounds are produced.  We will learn about pitch and volume and how different size objects make different types of sounds.

Writing:

We will continue to expand our writing to include exciting beginnings to our stories and great ways to end our stories.  We will work on adding details to our writings. We are working on describing people, objects and events.

Classroom Expectations

I always have high expectations for the students in my classroom. I expect proper behavior from the children after we have gone over the rules and procedures of the classroom. I want the children to have high expectations for themselves. I will always try to be respectful of the children and their feelings and hope that you, as parents, teach them the same thing.  I am always willing to talk to parents and work out problems, but I do expect it to be done in a professional, courteous manner.

Parent Expectations

We are all extremely busy. I understand that many things happen during the day and evening. I do, however, expect that parents help children with their homework and reading as much as possible. Practice makes perfect. If you are reading to them, they will come to learn that reading is important. I am always here for help if needed and will provide as much support as possible.

Homework

Lunch

Please make sure you keep up with your child's lunch account and put money in it accordingly. Our classroom can buy snacks in the lunchroom on Fridays. This is something that has worked extremely well the past few years. It teaches the children to make healthy choices and makes getting a snack on Fridays special. Remember, the children will have a snack each day in the classroom.

Daily Assessment

Make sure you are signing the sheet each night and talking to your child about their behavior and the expectations of the classroom and the school as a whole.

If you need to have one at another time, please contact me and let me know. I can be reached at though@wcpss.net, or call the school at 365-2680 and leave a messag
