HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!

  The children are very excited about the 100th Day of School and celebrating Valentine's Day soon.  We are busy at school starting a new unit on Geography and learning how to estimate in math.  Hopefully we will continue to have nice weather and not miss any school.   The next set of 25 will be sent home this week to start practicing.  Our first test on those words will be in March.  Make sure to check out our IMPORTANT DATES to see what else we have planned for the month.    Please check over your child's assignments and watch for any problem areas.  Communication is key  in order to be successful, so please stay up to date with what is going on at school through your child's agenda and Tuesday Folder.  Second grade is full of many exciting learning opportunities and we can't wait to get started.  Thanks for sharing your child with us each and everyday!!

What We're Doing At School:

*Reading - BIOGRAPHIES

Difference between Biography & Autobiography

Read about Ellen Ochoa, Wilma Ruldolph, and Teddy Roosevelt

BIOGRAPHY GROUP PROJECTS:

Students will be working collaboratively in teams to research and complete a biography poster on an important figure in America.  The class has chosen complete biographies on the following:  Eli Manning, Derek Jeter, Carrie Underwood, and Willow Smith

*Writing - Students will be writing stories about a time they lost a tooth.  We will display these stories in the hall with their TOOTH that is due Monday!

*Math - 

-FRACTIONS

-equal/unequal parts

-estimating fractional parts

-fractions of a set

-comparing fractions

Science -  

Social Studies - GEOGRAPHY - Students will learn about the Earth's land, the 7 continents, 4 major ocean, and how people live on the Earth over the next few weeks.  They will tell about all of the places in America that they have been as well.

Reading Logs - WE ARE OFF TO A GREAT START WITH OUR READING LOGS!! AS A CLASS WE HAVE READ FOR  1,634  MILES SO FAR-WAY TO GO!!!

** READING MINUTES TURNED INTO MILES FOR RACE TO READ  PROGRAM!!**  (15 minutes = 1 mile)

  Each child is required to read at least 20 minutes every night.  Please record the title of the book, how many pages were read, and minutes read.  A set of reading conferencing questions will be kept in your students reading baggie to practice at home.  Students will be conferenced with on their book choice everyday.  We will be keeping a tally of how many minutes are read each week.  Each second grade class will keep track of their reading minutes in the cafeteria.  Let's watch our reading minutes soar high!  Students will earn a book charm after every five hours of reading.  These reading logs will be checked daily!

REMINDERS

*Continue to check/sign your child's homework agenda each night. Make sure they follow the directions written in their agenda and have their NAME on all homework.

*LUNCH MONEY
Your child has an account in the cafeteria that you can put money into. Anytime you send money, make sure it is in an envelope with your child's name, pin number, and teacher's name on it. Our lunch time is 10:30-11:00. If you plan to eat with your child, go by the office and sign in first before coming to the room. We look forward to seeing you at lunch one day!
