Kindergarten Letter November 2, 2009
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The students had a great time at our Halloween celebration on Friday. Thanks to all the parents for making it such a success! We also enjoyed making crafts with our 8th grade buddies Friday morning. This Friday is a dress down day for families who attended the HSA meeting in October
The school mass for All Souls’ Day is Monday, Nov. 2ndat 10 am. All parents are welcome to attend. Library books are due back Tuesday, Nov. 3rd.
The letter of the week is Tt. The students will learn the beginning and ending sound of the letter Tt. Please assist your child in thinking of some words that begin with and some words that end with the sound of Tt. We will continue to work with blending together words with short i to reinforce phonics. Homework will be to continue to make short sentences using word wall words and word family words to practice reading. The students will listen to a story about Thomas Edison and think about something they would like to invent and write about it for a journal activity. We will also read some fantasy stories and discuss how we know the stories are fantasy.
The students will complete the math unit on patterns and take the end of the chapter test. Even though we will complete this unit, the concept of patterns will continue through the school year. The new unit will cover the numbers zero through ten and work on one-to-one correspondence.
In religion the children will learn to appreciate that God gave them teachers to help them learn. We will also cover all the many people who have taught them during their lives and learn that they can also teach others. You may want to share some of the things you, as parents, have taught your children. It may be riding a bike, making cookies, how to collect items for a hobby, etc.
The Life Science unit will continue covering animals. The students will review what plants need to live and think about what animals need to live.
Have a great week! Mrs. Broomall

This note will explain the discipline guidelines in Kindergarten for the upcoming year, which will begin on Monday. I use two methods: Positive Reinforcement and 1 2 3Magic. Positive Reinforcement: Each child receives either a chart or a shape to correspond with the season to keep at their seat. When Mrs. Vulcan or I see a child listening and following directions they receive a sticker. When the child has received 20 stickers they will have a prize of some type. For September, I will let the students purchase snack on any day they choose. October will be Halloween pencils. So each month the prize will be different. 1 2 3 Magic: This is a program that really seems to work like Magic! Sister Dorita, our Spiritual Counselor, has the book and DVD on the 1 2 3 Magic program available for parents to checkout if you are interested in using the program at home. Each child will have 3 sticks – green (good), yellow (satisfactory), red (needs improvement) and a clip on the stoplight. The program involves 3 opportunities to listen and follow directions. At each reminder the child will move his/her clip on the stoplight. After the third reminder (green on the stop light) the child will owe one stick (first green, then yellow, and last red) to either Mrs. Vulcan or me. This will be reflected in the daily communicator that comes home each day for you to review and sign. Donations that are always needed:Band-Aids Disinfectant Wipes Hand Sanitizer Kindergarten Homework Ideas Although I give homework each week, these suggestions are supplements for those families that want their child to have additional homework.
