Kindergarten Letter November 16, 2009

Dear Parents and Guardians:

If you volunteered to work this weekend at the Bazaar your child will receive a dress down day this Friday, November 20th. Please let me know on Monday if you did volunteer your time for this Parish event. Please remember to send in your child’s library book on Tuesday. This is a full week of school and next Monday the 23rd is a noon dismissal. There is no school for students Tuesday the 24th through Friday the 27thdue to conferences and the Thanksgiving holiday. Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for Monday afternoon and evening and Tuesday morning. I look forward to meeting with everyone during the conferences. Please think about any questions you may have and write those down to bring to the conference. You will receive your child’s first Kindergarten Progress Report.

In religion the theme will be Thanksgiving and thanking God for everything we have been blessed with including the earth, animals, families, and friends. We will discuss the Pilgrims and why they celebrated the first Thanksgiving holiday. Please help your child think of what they are thankful for. The students will make a Thanksgiving wreath which displays what they are thankful for (family, friends, pets, food, homes, church, etc.)

The letter of the week is Oo. The students will learn the short and long sound of Oo. Please help your child think of works that begin with the sound of short O as in olive, octopus, ostrich and long O as in open and ocean. The students will learn the middle sound of o in the word families: -op: hop, mop, pop, top,and –ot: dot, hot, pot, spot, and –og: dog, fog, log, frog. New high frequency words covered this week are: /you/ and the word /on/. We will review all the letters covered to this point in the school year and continue to work on blending the letters together to form words. The students will use the word families to make rhyming words and read as well as reading the word wall words. A story in the language arts unit this week is The Velveteen Rabbit. I’m sure many of  you are familiar with the story of the rabbit that was very special to a child. On Friday your child may bring in a stuffed animal that is special to him or her. Please help your child practice talking about why the stuffed animal is a special friend in a few sentences. The students will share their special friends in small group on Friday.

The math chapter on numbers 0 - 5 will be completed this week and the new chapter in math covers the numbers 6 - 10. The students will practice counting, writing, and identifying the numbers 6 – 10.

The life science unit will cover reptiles this week. We will look at their homes, the types of skin covering and how they are different from other animals.

This letter will be the last one until after the Thanksgiving holiday. Mrs. Vulcan and I wish you and your family a safe and thankful holiday!

Mrs. Broomall

Discipline Guidelines for Kindergarten

This note will explain the discipline guidelines in Kindergarten for the upcoming year, which will begin on Monday. I use two methods: Positive Reinforcement and 1 2 3 Magic.

Positive Reinforcement: Each child receives either a chart or a shape to correspond with the season to keep at their seat. When Mrs. Vulcan or I see a child listening and following directions they receive a sticker. When the child has received 20 stickers they will have a prize of some type. For September, I will let the students purchase snack on any day they choose. October will be Halloween pencils. So each month the prize will be different.

1 2 3 Magic:  This is a program that really seems to work like Magic! Sister Dorita, our Spiritual Counselor, has the book and DVD on the 1 2 3 Magic program available for parents to checkout if you are interested in using the program at home. Each child will have a stick in the stoplight. The program involves 3 opportunities to listen and follow directions. After 3 reminders/prompts the child will move his/her stick on the stoplight from green to yellow. After 3 more reminders/prompts the stick will move to red. This will be reflected in the daily communicator that comes home each day for you to review and sign.

Donations that are always needed:

Kindergarten Homework Ideas

Although I give homework each week, these suggestions are supplements for those families that want their child to have additional homework.

  1. Read to your child and ask comprehension questions. Who are the characters in the story? What are they like (personality)? What was the problem of the story and how was it solved? Stop during reading and ask what they predict might happen next.
  2. Practice upper case letter recognition, lower case recognition, and the sound of each letter. Go through magazines or books and read words that aren’t common to your child and ask what the word begins with, i.e. telescope, sound, plate, country, etc. Ask for the beginning and ending sound of words.
  3. Practice word wall words and word family words with your child. Your child can practice with flashcards, writing the words, using the words to make sentences in a journal or on handwriting paper or you can make a game board, TicTacToe board, or bingo game as alternative ways to practice words. Play “hangman” with words they are familiar with such as word wall words, word family words, holiday/seasonal words, the months of the year, or days of the week.
  4. Practice 3 letter words with your child. Give them a word like “jet” and say it slowly /j/ /e/ /t/ sounding sound each of the 3 sounds. Ask your child to give you the beginning and ending sound of the word. Give your child simple 3 letter words for a home spelling test.
  5. Your child may write stories in a journal or on paper using invented spelling along with word wall words and illustrate the story.
  6. Your child may want to make books of their own with their stories and your help in spelling words. Just fold some plain paper together or staple two sheets of paper together and fold it so the book will be several pages long.
  7. There are many books appropriate for their reading level at the teacher stores and at borders. Please make sure you read the book for each level. Level 1 and level 2 books aren’t the same, they vary by publisher. The local library and librarian is also a good resource for easy reading books.
  8. Your child may cut out pictures with beginning sounds to match up to letters.
  9. Practice putting the alphabet in alphabetical order.
  10. The www.starfall.com website has alphabet activities, abc printouts, beginning reading activities, and reading activities. There are other websites listed at the top of the schoolnotes webpage with activity sheets that can be printed out to practice printing letters and sounds.
  11. Practice printing last names.
  12. Practice counting to 100 and making more complex patterns.
  13. Your child needs to know his/her full name, address including city and state, and phone number. He/she will be graded on this for the second trimester marking period. Please practice this important information with your child and check every few weeks to make sure it is retained.
  14. Your child will be graded on being able to button, zipper, snap and tie 2nd marking period. Please practice this at home as well.
  15. You can purchase Kindergarten workbooks at almost any store including Office Max, Borders, The Teacher’s Book Bag, Happy Harry’s, Wal-Mart, etc.
  16. Practice rhyming words. There are many children’s books that have rhyming words.
  17. Let them read, even if they have memorized the words in books such as Brown Bear Brown Bear and Green Eggs and Ham.
