Week of 11/13:
Happenings for this week:
Here is what we will be learning this week:
Religion – We will complete our study of people who stood up for their faith (particularly the saints). Test on Tuesday – Math – We will begin a short study of making change from $1.00. Quiz on Thursday. Please make sure your child is studying the appropriate times table nightly. Check agenda book for the fact that they are working on. We will begin adding more facts in the second qtr. At this point, your child should be mastering facts 1 – 5. Social Studies – We will complete our initial study of geography and the themes of geography as well as our introduction to communities. Test on
Science – We will continue to study animal environments and habitats this week.
Good Mr. Westgate showed us a great dictionary skills website. Check it out! www.quia.com/rr/45806.html
Spelling – Spelling test on Friday. Remember to check out www.spellingcity.com – it’s a fun way to learn the words.
From this point forward our spelling lists will be in cursive. We have reviewed all the lowercase letters; therefore, the 2x each must now be in cursive. When the students write their 10 sentences for homework, 5 must be in cursive. 5 words must be in cursive for this Friday’s spelling test – they can pick the words that that want to write in cursive.
Phonics – We will study words that make the /j/ sound but are spelled with a ‘g’ & words that make the /s/ sound that are spelled with the ‘c’.
Grammar – we will begin our study of possessive nouns this week.
Writing – We will continue Haiku poetry this week.
Also, I have given the students a journal prompt sheet. They are to choose 2 journal prompts per month and respond to them in their writing journals. This will be completed in class during free time or during writer’s workshop. This activity will help them to become better writers. It is meant as journal writing; therefore, no editing is done on this work. It is meant to encourage the students to get their thoughts onto paper.
Handwriting – complete pages 39, 40, 41 by Friday of this week. We will be transitioning to all cursive writing in the classroom. Many of the students have already begun to write consistently in cursive. We will begin our transition in spelling (see above).
If you need to reach me, please call the school office or send in a note with your child.
God Bless, Mrs. Heavilon
