Week of 11/20:

Happenings for this week:

  • Barnes and Noble night at the Promenade from 6 – 10PM.  I will be reading between 7 – 8:00PM.  Hope to see you there!
  • Report cards distributed by Msgr. Schlert on Thursday, 11/19.
  • Grandparent’s luncheon on Thursday, 11/19.  If you haven’t returned the form, please do so asap!
  • Scholastic Book orders due by 11/20.
  • Note: Mon – Weds, 11/23 – 11/25 is ½ days due to parent/teacher conferences and Thanksgiving break.  Appointment times were sent home regarding your child’s conference date and time.  If you did not receive the slip, please send me a note asap.

Here is what we will be learning this week:

Religion – We will complete our study of the Church – Ch. 6.

Math – We will complete our study of money and making change from $1.00.  Test on Tuesday! We will begin our study of interpreting graphs and probability.

Please make sure your child is studying the appropriate times table nightly. Check agenda book for the fact that they are working on.  We will begin adding more facts in the second qtr.  At this point, your child should be mastering facts 1 – 5.

Social Studies – We will begin our study of Native Americans.

Science – We will complete our study animal environments and habitats this week.  Test on Friday.

Reading – We will be reading Nights of the Pufflings this week.

Good Reading Links:

Mr. Westgate showed us a great dictionary skills website.  Check it out!  www.quia.com/rr/45806.html

Spelling – Spelling test on Friday.   Remember to check out www.spellingcity.com – it’s a fun way to learn the words.

From this point forward our spelling lists will be in cursive.  We have reviewed all the lowercase letters; therefore, the 2x each must now be in cursive.  When the students write their 10 sentences for homework, 5 must be in cursive.  5 words must be in cursive for this Friday’s spelling test – they can pick the words that that want to write in cursive.

Phonics – We will study words that are spelled with an ‘ow’ an make sounds heard in words like blow and owl.

Grammar – we will complete our study of possessive nouns this week.  Test on Friday (singular and plural possessives and irregular possessives – textbook pages: 348 – 353.

Writing – We began a paragraph writing assignment last week; a definition essay on Thanksgiving.  We will continue to work on that this week.

Also, I have given the students a journal prompt sheet.  They are to choose 2 journal prompts per month and respond to them in their writing journals.  This will be completed in class during free time or during writer’s workshop.   This activity will help them to become better writers.  It is meant as journal writing; therefore, no editing is done on this work.  It is meant to encourage the students to get their thoughts onto paper.

Handwriting – complete pages 42, 43, 44  by Friday of this week.  We will be transitioning to all cursive writing in the classroom.  Many of the students have already begun to write consistently in cursive.  We will begin our transition in spelling (see above).

If you need to reach me, please call the school office or send in a note with your child.

God Bless,

Mrs. Heavilon
