Happenings in Room 306:
Congratulations to room 306! ½ the class (15 out of 30 students) passed their timed test on Friday. Awesome job working on your multiplication facts!

We will continue working on non-fiction literature circles. Students will be given time to work on their jobs in class, but must finish them at home as homework. Each student has a job to do with each reading assignment. The students are to report back to their lit circles with the information the following day. Please ask your child to share information about the story he/she is reading. The job your child may have for the Lit Circle is "Discussion Director"- comes up with 5 "fat" questions to lead discussions with, "Connector Director"- relates how the reading is connected to the world we live in and/or to their own life, " Wild & Crazy Word Finder"- finds new vocabulary and defines what the word means in the readings, and the "Summarizer"- sums up the reading. Each student will do each job once during this book.

In Science we will be finishing Chapter 1. We will be heading to the Science lab on Wednesday and Thursday to see what we can discover about MICROORGANISMS.
Science Vocabulary Quiz Monday 10/6. Chapter 1 test will be Wednesday 10/15

In Math we are continuing in Unit 2 to examine different uses of numbers, their many names, and the system we use to record numbers. This week we are reviewing procedures for adding and subtracting multidigit whole numbers. Please encourage your child to try some of these new methods and ultimately to stick to the method that they are consistently successful with. The final lessons in this unit reintroduce and extend ideas about data collection, organization, display, and analysis.

Daily Paragraph Editing from Evan-Moor

Daily Paragraph Editing from Evan-Moor will have your child putting all of those grammar skills to use. Each day (four days a week), your child will edit a paragraph using proper proofreading marks. Each week the paragraphs to be edited are about interesting topics about various subjects that will keep your child interested in the process.

One of the benefits of using Daily Paragraph Editing is the ease in which your child will learn to use the proper editing marks. This has always been a challenge for me because I was never taught them and most curriculums assume you are already familiar with them.
Topics covered in the writings include:

* Biographies
* Character Sketches
* Science and Social Studies Articles
* Book Reviews
* News Articles
* Editorials
* Historical and Realistic Fiction
* Fables and Fantasy
* Letters and Journal Entries
* Personal Narratives
* And More
On Fridays your child will write to a prompt based on the week's reading. The prompt may ask them to write a summary, continue the story, write a friendly letter, or give their opinion. We are looking for correct paragraph format as well as correct spelling and grammar.
