Week of September 15:

Vocabulary words for the week (will be among those items tested on Friday)

mercantilism Columbian Exchange
Northwest Passage coureur de bois

Quiz #4 on Friday 9/19 - Chap 2 sec. 4 Exploring North America

For the week we will be examining how events in Northern European countries prompted exploration in the Americas. Primarily, how the reforms of the Roman Catholic Church and the rise of the middle class in Northern Europe led to the desire to expand outside of Europe. Secondarily, how the rise of a solid middle class coupled with a newly established sense of nationalism prompted the need to expand markets and thus created the need for more raw materials which could be provided only by territorial expansion. Lastly, we will be examining the differences between the Spanish and Portuguese colonies along with their accompanying economic philosophies and the English/French/Dutch approach to colonization and their economic philosophies.
