October 29, 2009

Happy Halloween!  It’s scary how much the students are learning in 5thGrade!  For example, our topics for thisweek and next week include:

Religion – Studying the Apostles’Creed, which contains the central truths of our Catholic faith.  Since our belief in the Trinity is soimportant, we’ll be creating triptychs to illustrate this.  Projects are due and there is a test onWednesday.

Vocabulary – Finishing up Unit 5, andbeginning work on Unit 6.

Grammar – Continuing our work with verbs– action verbs and direct objects, verb tenses, linking verbs, main and helpingverbs, irregular verbs, and frequently misused verbs.

Writing – Finishing up our unit onimproving the organization of our writing. We’ve organized chronologically, by similar ideas and details, byposition or location, by cause and effect, and by comparing and contrasting, and to support an opinion.  We’ll finishup by choosing a topic and then deciding and using the best type oforganization to write about it.  Thiswriting is due Thursday.

Social Studies – We had a great time learningabout farming and just life in general before the widespread use of machines onour field trip to Wagner Farms.  We’vechosen colonial occupations we’ll be studying, and now we’re looking ateveryday life in the English colonies.

FYI – The following isattached to the hard copy of this week’s newsletter.

Vocabulary– Unit 5 - Test

Grammar– Unit 2 Nouns - Test

SocialStudies – Ch 5 The Struggle to Found Colonies – Colony Poster, Test

Miscellaneous Notes  - Have a great weekend and week!
