Welcome to Mr. Knowlton's homework website. My extra help days for 2010-2011 are usually Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. If you have any questions, you may reach me at the attached email link. You may also gain access to pearsonsuccessnet for an on-line textbook by clicking on the following: http://www.pearsonsuccessnet.com. Your child's user name is first name_last initial (all lower case). The password is savkno. Please note that I now have an instruction page for iParent, a feature of our grading program iPass that allows parents to access their child's grades at any time. This is now an all-school program. Let us know of any concerns or suggestions you may have. ****iPass is now fully operational. That means that you should be able to access the iParent site any time you wish to observe your child's progress. Just use the instructions sent home by the central office. I also have an instruction page on here on schoolnotes. We're getting down to the last few catalogues of the school year, so if you want to stockpile some really good books for the summer, now is the time to order. You won't find a better deal than from Scholastic Book Services. If you wish to order on line, our class activation code is HBVNY. Just have your child let me know you are ordering so that I can finalize the order. There is no deadline for online ordering. There will be no more catalogues for this school year. On-line purchases may continue throughout the summer. MA 01: No homework. MA 02: No homework. LA 01: Week 3 of novel due Monday. Book project due Thursday. LA 02: Week 3 of novel due Monday. Since Thanksgiving, I have been providing extra time for my at-risk students to make up and re-do missing and poorly done assignments. These times have included lunch, recess, enrichment and after school sessions (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday). As a result, my weekly honor rolls for my two Language Arts and two Math classes have nearly doubled.
While I am very encouraged by this development, I have found that for the past month, the same handful of at-risk students continue to miss assignments and to do poorly on others. The extra time is simply not paying off.
Therefore, for the remainder of the year, I will no longer issue lunch or recess detentions for make-up work. I will continue to assist students who wish help during enrichment periods and after school (only Monday and Tuesday).
I will now be following the homework policy stated in our handbook (at the front of your child’s agenda). This states that work one day late will receive ½ credit (a 100% becomes a 50%, a 70% becomes 35%, etc.) and work two or more days late will receive a 0%. Absences will get the number of days absent, plus one extra day to make up what was missed (2 days out gets 3 days). Students and parents also need to be reminded that there is no minimum grade of 50% for the final term. Your child will receive exactly the numerical grade that he/she has earned.

With Parent/Teacher Conferences at an end, one thing has become very apparent. The vast majority of our 6th-grade students with unsatisfactory grades all have problems with organization. Many with satisfactory grades also have this problem--even after the school year is nearly one third over.
While I can’t do much about this outside of school or in other people’s classes, I have decided to attempt to change things in my classes. I have been encouraging each of my students to keep all their papers in a one-subject 3-ring binder in the order in which I return them. Based on my recent binder check, I didn’t give enough encouragement. So, from this point on, binders will be mandatory and all papers are to be kept in them. There will be no extra folders or papers stored in books, notebooks or agendas. There are to be no loose papers in lockers or book bags. Binders and agendas are to be taken home each night and brought back each morning. There will be no excuses accepted for failure to do this. If you cannot afford binders for your child, I will provide them, as I have done since the beginning of the year.
Students are to come to class each day prepared with all the necessary materials. I put a list outside my classroom door and along the
Lockers will be kept clean or students will serve a lunch or afterschool detention. Books are to be placed upright so as not to create piles that fall. Clothing worn to school is to be brought home—not stored in lockers as if they were closets.
These are all things that students have been told since the beginning of the year. I have simply been remiss in enforcing them.
