ALL 6TH GRADE BAND STUDENTS AND PARENTS PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING!!!!!

Understanding Practice

(1) The Requirements

• All students wanting to receive an “ A” grade in band must practice an average of 60 minutes per week
• Blank practice sheets are available in the band room to use, or you can use your own paper
• It is suggested that students turn in practice sheets once a week (for example-every Monday)
• If you forget to turn in your minutes one week, add the minutes for two weeks and turn them in the next week
• All minutes are due the last day of the grading period. They must have the students name, the amount of time (in minutes, not hours please) and be signed by a parent or guardian
• You could wait until the last day of the grading period and the last minute to turn in all of your practice time, but if you are absent or forget your minutes at home, it will not be accepted after the deadline
• If you practice more than the required time for the grading period, extra minutes will be used for extra credit to eliminate any zeros (if you have any) or applied to the following grading period)
• Practice is not required during Christmas break, spring break or Thanksgiving break

(2) How often should I practice?

I recommend 15-40 minutes per session. 60 minutes is generally too long for an average middle school student to concentrate. Less than 10 minutes is not enough time to get anything done. I would advise 20 minutes at a time (3 days per week) or 15 minutes at a time 4 days a week. Some highly motivated students may be successful with an hour at a time. More than 90 minutes a session may cause soreness and muscle fatigue in brass and woodwind players.

(3) How to Practice- (some suggestions)

Step One- find a comfortable place and time which is good for you and your family

Step Two- Warm-up- Begin with a few easy and fun exercises (2-3) Remind yourself of correct posture, hand position, breathing and tapping your foot

Step Three- Decide what you need to work on. Play the tough parts in small sections before attempting to play the whole song

Step Four- Trouble Spots- go slow, be patient and once you get it right, see if you can play it correctly three times in a row

Step Five - Decide when to stop- when you get tired; when your mind keeps wandering; when your parent or guardian tells you to!!

Step Six- Finishing- play 1-2 exercises you like. Decide what you need to work on next time and clean your instrument

Parents can fax or phone the minutes in, but it must be before the deadline and please include your child’s first and last name. (Once I received minutes for “Chris” - I had 3 students named Chris and I gave the credit to the wrong one)

Grades for 6th 7th and 8th Grade Band
(Mr. Sanford’s classes)

Grades for 6th, 7th and 8th grade band are measured by the following:

(1) Weekly Participation Grade-10 points per week
Students are expected to bring their instrument and participate in a positive way
Disruptive behavior, not playing or unexcused absences will lower this part of the grade

(2) Concerts and performances- 50% of the grade
Students will have 2-5 performances per year and are expected to attend- this is our “final exam”. Students can be excused in the case of family emergencies, plans made previous to receiving the concert schedule(such as vacations, tickets to events etc..) or illness.

(3) Quizes and playing exams-5% of the grade
There are usually 1-3 of these each 6 week period

(4) Required practice
This must be achieved in order to receive an “A” for the 6 week period. Students are to practice a minimum of 60 minutes per week. (Usually 300 minutes for the 6 weeks.-one week is subtracted) Practice is not required during spring break, Christmas break or in the summer. If the student is ill, the instrument is in the shop or the student is on vacation for 3 or more days in a week, the amount of minutes needed for an “A” will be adjusted. An additional explanation about how, when and how much to practice will be sent home.

Extra Credit
(1) Any practice minutes above the required amount will go as extra credit
(2) Going to live performances of any kind of music- including rock concerts, other school concerts, church performances (but not regular services) piano recitals etc..
(3) Private lessons or practice on any instrument including your own
