Permission Slip For:

Starfish Team

World Geography ~ Year End Project

Monday, June 1, 2009

The Starfish Team World Geography classes will begin work on their end of the year projects this week. This project will be the final exam grade for the class.

One of the options for earning points is for the students to bring in a food or dish to share with the class. The food/dish should be from the country they have chosen for their project and there should be enough for 20 – 25 people to sample. Please make sure any food that needs to be cut is done so ahead of time. Do not send knives to school. Students are responsible taking any bowls, platters, etc. home. We will not be responsible for any containers that are left behind.

The Food Tasting is another way for students to gain exposure to other countries and cultures. No one will be required to taste anything that they do not want to try.

On the day of the food tasting, our classes will be held at the picnic tables outside of Room 22 (Ms. Layendecker’s room).

In order for students to participate in the food tasting, they must return this permission slip prior to the event. If the form has not been signed and returned, your child will not be allowed to participate in the food tasting. If your child has any food allergies or restrictions, please list them:    _________________________________________________

Please complete the permission slip below and return to Ms. Conover.

African Culture

Project Objective:  The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the diversity of African Culture

Project Description:  You will create a poster, which illustrates the diversity of the African cultures.  You will choose two cultural aspects and show differences and similarities in these aspects in the five different geographical regions we are studying. Choose one country from each of the five regions and find pictures of the two cultural aspects you have chosen from each of the five countries.

Material suggestions:  Gather maps, newspaper and magazine clippings, post cards, illustrations, computer graphics, and whatever else you choose to decorate this poster. You must use a standard poster board – color of your choice.

Grading Guidelines:  This project counts as a test grade, so take it seriously and put forth your best effort.  Your poster should have a title. On this project, you will need to put information boxes next to each of the pictures you are using for illustration of the cultural aspects. They will contain details regarding which country is being represented and what is happening in the picture. The information boxes should also be used to note the similarities and differences you have found. Be sure your name and class period are on the back of your poster along with this rubric.

The poster will be presented to the class.

World Geography Extra Credit                          How fast can you travel around the world?

We have watched the movie Around the World in Eighty Days. In the movie, Mr. Phileas Fogg attempts to circumvent the world in Eight Days or less in the 1800’s.

To earn extra credit over the holidays, prepare a log showing how long it would take to make the same trip today. There are many websites you can use to find flights (Expedia.com, Travelocity.com, etc.) and most will give you all of the information you need (departure dates, departure times, time in air, miles traveled, etc.).

When changing planes, you must allow at least 30 minutes between flights if staying with the same airline for the connecting flight. You must allow a minimum of 60 minutes between flights if you would be required to change airlines in any given airport. You must also depart from the airport in which you land.

Be aware of the fact that just because one flight leaves before another, does not necessarily mean that it will arrive ahead of the later flight. If the earlier flight has to make 2 stops but the later flight is a non-stop, it may be faster to take the later flight.

If you need another copy of the spreadsheet to record your information you can contact me throught this website and I will e-mail a copy to you. When contacting me, please include your name so I know who I am responding to!!

Please include at the bottom of the graph the name of the website you used for your information as well as a list of the airlines you chose.

Have fun!!
