Welcome to Mr. Armstrong's Social Studies (and maybe some PE and Computers too) Note Page!

Jan. 27, 2012 - We are getting closer to the end of term two. Term 2 reports will be issued on March 13.  That means the cut-off for term 2 work is the end of February.  Parent Teacher interviews are the evening of March 14 (5 - 8 pm)

The History students have been hard at work. We are currently working on chapter 7 - the ancient civilization of Greece.  This is a major part of the history curriculum and will take a little longer than other chapters.  The students have a workbook to complete and are just finishing a brochure project in which they choose the topics that interest them about ancient Greece.  There will be a chapter test coming up soon (mid February).

Remember, the students do not get time in class to read the chapter.  It is expected that they will read the chapter AT HOME prior to the chapter test.  If you haven't seen the textbook, it's probably because they are not doing the required reading!

After Greece we will be studying a very famous individual, Alexander the Great.  This chapter will take us into the spring break.  After spring break we will begin a study of ancient Rome and conclude the year with the middle ages.

The Social Studies students are currently working on chapter 3.  Chapter 3 looks at factors which effect population around the world.  They are almost finished a brochure project in which they choose four of the six main points of the chapter and discuss them in detail.  They will view several short videos about population problems in the coming week and then write  a chapter test (mid February).  At the conclusion of chapter 3 they will proceed to chapter 4 and 5 which look at quality of life and human rights.

Sports - The students have completed basketball and floor hockey units and are now learning about badminton.  The boys extra-curricular basketball is now in full swing.  They have played several games and are consistently improving.  Unfortunately only four girls expressed an interest in playing basketball and thats just not enough to field a team.

Computers - The students are in the middle of creating choose-your-own-adventure stories.  There are some very creative stories from our students!  Ask your child what their story is about!

* school clothing orders are coming home with the students on Friday, January 27.  All proceeds from the Earl Grey clothing will go towards the school beautification project.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to send me an email (parmstrong@wsd1.org)!
