Anglo-Saxon background quiz.  Review of Glossary of Usage, Exercise 3, 606-607.  Distribute Vocabulary Lesson 2.  Comparing Old, Middle and Modern English.  Reading The Battle of Maldon and discussing its Anglo-Saxon characteristics.  Introduction to Beowulf: Distribute handout on epic heroes, alliteration and kennings; also handout on Beowulf’s Family Tree and background of the poem.  HW: Vocabulary Lesson 2.

August 27/28:

August 29/September 2:

September 3/4:

Final review of Glossary of Usage, Chapter Post-Test, 618-619; check.  Vocabulary Lesson 2 quiz.  Reading Beowulf Parts 12-17.  HW: Finish Beowulf study guide; Glossary of Usage test.

September 5/8:

Glossary of Usage Test.  Final discussion of Beowulf: students will work briefly in groups to assess the hero and the monsters in the poem; also to defend several critical stances of the poem.    HW: Test on Anglo-Saxon literature next time; leave your textbooks at home until further notice.

September 9/10:  

Test on Anglo-Saxon literature.  Solving Anglo-Saxon riddles. Distributing Vocabulary Lesson 3.  HW: Vocabulary Lesson 3; Literary terms 1-30 quiz; Bring The Hobbit; Celtic Fest projects due.

September 11/12:
