Welcome to 8th grade Science

Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science.

~Edwin Powell Hubble

Eighth-grade is an integral part of the South Carolina science curriculum.  Research skills are emphasized in various research projects throughout the year, including participation in the Science Fair.  Eighth-grade science is a combination of physical science, astronomy (concentrating on the solar system), geology, (structure and functions of the Earth), and life science (mainly involving adaptations of living things to change in their environment). A focus will be on hands-on experiences that encourage active engagement and concrete real-world examples that build basic science concepts.

I am looking forward to a year filled with social, emotional, and academic growth.  Please check out this site regularly so that you are aware of assignments, projects, key terms, and classroom activities.

Assessment/Calculation of Grades:

  • A pretest will be given to begin a unit and a post-test will be given at the end of a unit. Formative and summative quizzes will be given during the unit. Parents are asked to sign the pre-test.

Most tests will be given on Fridays.

Unannounced quizzes will be given periodically.

Projects will be assigned throughout the year.

    Grading Scale:                 100-93 A

                                     92-85  B

                                     84-77  C

                                     76-70  D

                                     69-00  F

Homework Policy:  Homework is due the day after it is assigned unless otherwise stated.  Each nine weeks, students are to read four science-related current event articles.  These articles may come from newspapers, magazines, or the Internet.  The student will be required to write a summary about the article and be prepared to share their information with the class.

Missed Work Policy:  Missed work due to excused absences may be made up upon returning to class.  No penalty is given as long as the work is completed and turned in no later than five days from the absence.  It is the student's responsibility to acquire assignments missed due to absences.

    Classroom Rules:

    1. Be prompt, prepared and ready to learn

    2  Complete all assignments promptly.

    3. Stay seated unless given permission to get up.

    4. Listen and follow directions the first time they are given.

    5. Be respectful of others.

    Discipline:

     1. Verbal warning

     2. Lunch Detention or After School Detention - 24-hour notice

     3. Phone call to parent or guardian

     4. Office Referral possibly resulting in I.S.S.

    Rewards:

     1. Praise daily

     2. Positive notes sent home (random)

     3. Bonus points on tests

     4. Various other perks throughout the year

Parents:  It is important that we work together to encourage your child to be successful.  The students may not have a written assignment every night or a test to study for but they should do some type of daily review.  For example, the student could re-read pages we covered in the class, review vocabulary, review class notes, or review study guides.  I look forward to getting to know your child.
