Students have really enjoyed our recent theme in reading, "Voyagers." A few of the stories that we have read together as a class are: Across the Wide Dark Sea and Yunmi and Halmoni's Trip. While reading these stories, we always work on reading skills such as predicting, knowing story elements, comprehension, fluency, summarizing and vocabulary. The grammar for this unit has been mainly pronouns, subject pronouns, object pronouns and possessive pronouns. In our small leveled reading groups, we read stories that fall under the same theme, but the books fit your child's reading level. We work on the same reading concepts, but at different levels. Students continue to write in their journals each week, write acrostic poems to the Star of the Week and answer various questions in complete sentences. We are also preparing for the End of Grade test. We are using reading strategies in class called UNRAAVEL and Question, Answer and Response (QAR) to help students with their comprehension skills. Please ask your child about these strategies and what the UNRAAVEL means.
In math we are working really hard on trying to memorize multiplication facts. Please be sure your child is using the flash cards each night! Multiplication is an important building block to 4th grade. It will be very difficult for your child to do long division if they don't have their multiplication tables memorized. We are currently finishing our unit on measurement and our last topic before the End of Grade test will be data and graphing. We will also be doing a lot of reviewing in order to prepare for the test. Social Studies We are wrapping up our unit on heros / African American history and will soon be doing economics. Science Our next unit in science is on plants and soil.
