Discovery Educator Network

Our students in grades 3 through 8 are becoming more experienced with blogging. We will welcome comments from you on our writing. Please use the link above to our blog site and see what our students are learning and writing about. (All comments are moderated by me before going live.)

Parents, please sign up for notification on your child's individual class page. See links below. That is where most of the updates will occur. This main page will not have too many changes throughout the year so I will only do an update notification on the individual grade pages... AND, please include your name as well as your email address. Thank you!

Home computing information for parents:

Students will be asked more and more frequently to access information and projects online. It is important that home computers be up to date to make this access possible. May I suggest you have more than one browser installed and up-to-date such as:

at least IE7
Firefox 3.5
Google Chrome
Safari

Be sure to update Adobe Reader, Flash, Shockwave, and Java, and do any necessary security updates or service packs.

Students in grades 5 through 8, and possibly lower grades, will use a wikispaces account. Students in grades 3 though 8 will use a blogging account. Older students may be asked to access GoogleDocs. Students in grades 4 through 8 and possibly lower will have a Discovery Streaming account and need to access streaming video at home. This could be through Windows Media Player, Quicktime, or Flash. Skype may also be a handy application to have installed as it opens up the possiblilty of live interaction between the classroom and an absent student. We will continue to explore this option.

It is not necessary to purchase a flash drive/thumb drive/jump drive for your student as students have network storage space and any projects they may work on at home will be accessible online in one format or another. Students who are absent also have the option of using the lab at lunch recess with a pass from their teacher.

Please note: If your child does not have Internet access at home, please consider making the Internet accessible in some way. Although students without access may use the lab at lunch recess, they are at a disadvantage in the completion of projects, not only in technology class but across the curriculum.

Tech tip for parents: A number of students in elementary school have email accounts and the number seems to grow each year. Although there are advantages in students learning to use email, there are many precautions that should be taken. Privacy should not be an option in elementary school email. How can parents safeguard their students using email accounts? There are a number of suggestions offered by Kim Kommando for keeping students safe with email. Check out her website.

Tech schedule is as follows for this school year:

Monday : Grade 5
Tuesday: Grades 6 and 8
Wednesday: Grades 4 and 7
Thursday: Grade 3 and K (with Mrs. Buonpane)
Friday: Grades 1 and 2 (with Mrs. Buonpane)

The lab is open at lunch recess (12:15-12:45) for students in grades 5-8 who need time to work on technology projects or do make up work due to absence.

Parents and students are welcome to email me via the schoolnotes link at any time with any questions.
