Homework News

Homework is sent home every Friday. It is due the following Friday. Please find a quiet and clean place for your child to do homework. This helps to make doing homework a more positive experience. Please "help" your child as needed with their homework. Please avoid doing their homework. I want to see what they are capable of doing. Homework is supposed to reinforce things done in the classroom and provide extra practice.

Take home books and reading logs have already started coming home with your child. Please read these books to or with your child. Fill out the reading log each night as you read with your child. As they fill up a reading log they can turn it in for an ice cream treat. While you are reading please work with your child on book and print skills. Remember this is found in the BEE notebook.

Look through your child's BEE book and check their agendas and sign them daily.  This is how we communicate back and forth and I like to make sure you are informed on behavior, and any information needed.

Make sure you are looking through your child's Tuesday bag. I check all student work and will write notes or suggestions on them. Please take the time to look through the bags each week. Talk with your child about quality work. The office will also send important information home in the Tuesday bag.

I have been sending home weekly newsletters. Look for these to be sent out on Fridays from now on. I was putting them in Tuesday bags, but I am too afraid they aren't getting read do to the volume of information in the bags. In the weekly newsletter please make sure you read to see who is snack helper for the upcoming week. This is a snack provided for the entire class for Tuesday and Thursday, not just your child. Fruit, veggies, or other easy snacks are greatly appreciated.

Remember!!!  When sending money to school be sure to place it in an envelope or baggie with your child's name, what the money is for and lunch number if necessary.

Writer's Workshop
This is a time during the day that the students learn to be authors.  We are going to begin with who author's are and what they do. We have already begun by creating stories using letters and sounds as well as using letter strings to represent words. This is ok. They will also draw pictures to match what they write about and label what is in the picture. Continue to ask them what they wrote and talk with them about their stories. Remember, writing can also be done at home as well as school. Their writing will get better and better each day.
Encourage your child to look at everything as a potential story!  You will be amazed at what they can do!!

January Curriculum

Phonics
We are working on listening to the beginning sounds in words and writing the beginning sounds. We will begin to add ending sounds to words. We will also be working on reading word families such as the -at, -in, -ig families.

Social Studies
We will be learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We will learn about his values and teachings, his beliefs, and his part in the Civil Rights Movement. The students will learn of Dr. Kings dream for all people and they will write their own dream for the world.

Math
We are working on recognizing and writing numbers 10-20. We are learning the different ways to make each number. We are continuing to sort, graph, make patterns, and make numbers. Math is all around us and help your child see how we use math everyday!!

Happy 2011!! Make it a great year or not, the choice is YOURS!!
