7th Grade Mathematics

7th Grade Math focuses on preparing students to be able to master a number of fundamental concepts and skills necessary for successful progression in the expected standard course of study. These concepts and skills include Number & Operation Fluency, Measurement, Geometry, Analysis & Probability, and Algebraic Reasoning. At the end of the year there will be a required End of Grade (EOG) exam for all 7th grade math students encompassing all concepts and skills required of the state standard course of study.

Grades
Students will earn grades based on a total points system. Overall grades will be calculated by adding total earned points and dividing by total possible points (TPE/TPP). Classwork will be given a certain number of possible points for each assignment. Tests and homework will also be assigned an amount of possible points. As an example - during Q1 students have 100 possible points in homework, 400 possible points in classwork, and 250 possible points in tests. Total Possible Points, TPP, would be equal to 750.  If a student has earned a total of 700 points throughout the quarter, then the grade for that student would be equal to 700/750 = 93.3% (A).

Classwork
The work in class is considered the most important and is weighted accordingly. Approximately 2/3 of all possible points will be made available through class assignments. Some assignments are individual, and some are group. Other assignments may be given over the Internet. All students are encouraged to do their BEST work in class. That is the time when the most individual instruction and attention can be offered. It's ok to make mistakes. Students are encouraged to ask questions at any point.

Tests
Chapter tests will be given approximately 3 times per quarter. These tests will cover material for an entire chapter. Students will be made aware of test dates well in advance as well as posting those dates on this website.

Homework
Assignments in class are the bulk of the material, however homework will be assigned from time to time. Often you will hear your son/daughter say that they finished their homework already. Some homework assignments are an extension of the class assignment, and some are meant to be finishing the class assignment. There may also be homework involving the use of an Internet connection. If there is no access to the Internet at home, please notify me directly and I can make arrangements for Internet access here at school to complete assignments.

Curriculum Estimated Pacing Guide & Assignments
This guide will be updated as topics are covered and students perform assessment work. Check back regularly for tip sheets, homework assignments, quiz dates, assigned projects, and exams. Technology limits how much and what type of materials may be posted here, but whenever possible, class materials will be posted. This is meant to allow parents and students access to materials either left at school by accident or to replace lost materials.

There are 5 Competency Goals of the 7th Grade Mathematics Curriculum.
  1. Understand and compute with rational numbers.
    • 1.01 Develop and use ratios, proportions, and percents to solve problems.
    • 1.02 - Develop fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of rational numbers.
    • 1.03- Develop flexibility in solving problems by selecting strategies and using mental computation, estimation, calculators or computers, and paper and pencil.
  2. Understand and use measurement involving two and three dimensional figures.
    • 2.01 - Draw objects to scale and use scale drawings to solve problems.
    • 2.02 - Solve problems involving volume and surface area of cylinders, prisms, and composite shapes.
  3. Understand and use properties and relationships in geometry.
    • 3.01 - Using three-dimensional figures:
      • Identify, describe, and draw from various views.

      • Describe cross-sectional views.
    • 3.02- Identify, describe, and define similar and congruent polygons with respect to angle measures, length of sides, and proportionality of sides.
    • 3.03 - Use scaling and proportional reasoning to solve problems related to similar and congruent polygons.
  4. Understand and use graphs and data analysis
    • 4.01 - Collect, organize, analyze, and display data (including box plots and histograms) to solve problems.
    • 4.02- Calculate, use, and interpret the mean, median, mode, range, frequency distribution, and inter-quartile range for a set of data.
    • 4.03 - Describe how the mean, median, mode, range, frequency distribution, and inter-quartile range of a set of data affect its graph.
    • 4.04 - Identify outliers and determine their effect on the mean, median, mode, and range of a set of data.
    • 4.05 - Solve problems involving two or more sets of data using appropriate statistical measures.

The cumulative nature of mathematics means that all skills will be used in successive quarters regardless of the stated curriculum goal. Note that while Goal #4 is only specifically addressed in the first quarter, being able to create and interpret data and graphs of all types is a skill needed in all portions of the curriculum.
