Welcome to Mrs. Massey's fifth grade school notes. If you need to get in contact with me, please call me at 704-278-2131, extension 243.

It is extremely important that your child does all his homework and continues to do his very best. Weekly assignments given to your student include Spelling workbook pages given on Tuesday. Students are expected to READ thirty minutes every night, 5 nights a week.  This is especially important for students who are reading below 5th grade level. Please assist your child with this reading if he/she is reading below a 5th grade level. In addition, a weekly EOG prepartory reading worksheet will be in you child's take-home folder. This will give students as well as parents an idea of what to expect on the reading EOG.

Some tips that may help encourage your child to read are as follows:

  • Allow your child to stay up an extra half hour to read while lying in bed. This not only gets their reading time in, but will also relax them before falling to sleep. (This should be used only if your child does not have a late bedtime.)
  • Do shared reading. This is where you read a paragraph or page and then your child reads a paragraph or page.
  • If you have a tape recorder, let your child record him/herself reading and then listen to the tape of their reading.
  • Try audio books. These are available on a limited basis at the Rowan Public Library and to be effective, your child should follow along in the book at the same time.

Please work with your child in learning his/her multiplication tables. They should know through their ten times tables coming into fifth grade and should be working on their elevens and twelves.
