Dear Parents,

Thanks for visiting my site! I would like to give some tips on helping your child when he/she comes to an unknown word when reading.  Often we tell the child to "sound out" an unknown word.  This does not always work because all words are not decodable.  Here are some suggestions for helping your child become a more independent reader:

  • Use the picture to help figure out the word
  • Wait a few seconds to see what your child thinks the word is, then ask "What would make sense there?"
  • Skip the word and continue to read to the end of the sentence
  • Go back and reread the sentence and see if a word comes to mind that makes sense
  • Cover the ending (-ed, -ing) with your finger and see if you recognize the word or can sound it out
  • Look for smaller words you know inside the word
  • Help with blending the word

I hope these tips will help make your child a more independent and fluent reader.  Try them!

 Sincerely,

Robin Clary
