This year I will be updating my Wiki page weekly. It can be accessed through our school website by clicking on my name under the Faculty link, or by clicking on http://hemricshomeroomhappenings.pbworks.com This SchoolNotes site will be dormant for the remainder of the school year. Thanks to everyone who has faithfully checked this page over the years. Now stay up to date with our class by visiting the Wiki each week!
Fluency Practice Keep reading each day to keep your skills sharp. Help your child build fluency by reading your take home readers at least three times for homework. First, read the book to your child. Model how to use phrases and punctuation effectively. Then, read a page to your child. After you read, let your child echo reading the page as you read it to them. Finally, have your child read the entire book independently to you. These are fun ways to help your child grow as a reader. Check www.spellingcity.com to find our spelling lists. Practice tests and other fun activities are waiting for you there. Click on Find a List. Type in my name , and there you have the entire list. Have fun with it! Communication Corner!!!!! For extra news and anti-bullying information from our school system please visit my Wiki at http://hemricshomeroomhappenings.pbworks.com As always, if you have any questions please contact me here after school at 835-5640, or you may email me at hemricb@wilkes.k12.nc.us. Make sure to check your school calendars and red folders for upcoming events pertaining to our school. Information is also available on the school website accessible through www.wilkes.k12.nc.us. Here you can find the lunch calendar. Don’t forget to check out www.spellingcity.com to find our spelling words for the week. Check your red folders daily for information about our classroom. Take Home Readers Each child will also need to keep reading everyday. Make sure your child reads their take home reader aloud at least three times to build fluency for meeting the requirement of 50 words per minute. Read each day. Reread the books and retell the story each evening. Include characters, settings, and loads of details from beginning to end as you go over the story again. Dolch Sight Word Lists Practice the Dolch lists sent home in the brown envelope. These words should be practiced daily! Students should pass 11 lists by the end of the school year.. Many of you may pass the first list quickly. Way to go! Lucy Calkins High Frequency Word Lists Our class will take high frequency spelling word list tests. These tests have 129 words to be tested. Each student is required to master spelling at least 80% of this list. These will be the short word lists sent home each week along with the regular spelling lists. Continue to study them at home. Spelling The spelling list can be found at www.spellingcity.com. Click on Find a List. Type in Beth Hemric, and you will find our list with really neat activities and practice items. Check it out! Spelling Homework Homework Assignments Our homework will change just a bit in January. In addition to the take-home reader, Dolch lists, and math-fact cards each student is already doing there will be some spelling homework weekly. As our lists become more challenging we need extra practice using these words. To help with this each child will be required to write sentences with each spelling word. These sentences should be clear and well thought out. Please pay careful attention to capital letters and punctuation. Try working on a few sentences each evening, rather than waiting to do them all at once. This is a good strategy for building great study habits for the future. Your child will be sharing these sentences periodically with the class so make sure they can read them and understand what they’ve written. It should be fun to see how they progress using the skills they already have and will be acquiring. Spelling sentences will be due on Thursday of each week. Math Facts Students will be introduced to fact families. Every fact family has three members who can do four fun things together. Two of them are addition fun and two of them are subtraction fun! Practice your basic math facts. This week focus on the fact family for 5,8,13. 5+8=13 8+5=13 13-5=8 13-8=5 As new flash cards are added to your sets continue to practice daily. The newer facts should be studied each day while those the student seems to know should continue to be practiced less frequently. Your child is responsible for knowing every fact. Keep them sharp with regular practice!
