September 17, 2009 It is indeed a pleasure to be up and running onmy web page. During the week of September 21 – 25 studentswill sit for their Scholastic Inventory test, to determine a true measure oftheir Lexile, or reading level. Students will also complete their reading of Jr. Great Book’s ThroughThe Tunnel with a class revue and discussion on Thursday. There will be an open book test onFriday. Words of the week will be: almanac, detect, jeopardy, stupendous and suede. Homework, due Friday, will once again ask astudent to read a minimum of 100pages from an at home novel of their choice. This week they will write a one-page summary in which theywill identify the author’s purpose, the main idea, and plot development.Remember, parent’s signature is required for an A. On Monday I will distribute detailed instructionsfor our first book report of the year. Students are being asked to create a newspaper of their book. I will review these directions inclass, and I request that you please review them with your child at home. Please sign the cutoff, which indicatesyour understanding of this project, and have your child return it to me byFriday 9/25. I realize that my non-fiction comprehensionpassages might be of some concern to students and their parents. Pleasebe assured that I am asking higher order thinking questions, and teaching yourchildren how to analyze them. Please be patient and I am sure you willwatch the grades from the comprehension exercises increase as the year goes on. It is very important to read and sign yourchild's agenda every week. Your child will be responsible for bringingthe agenda to you, and securing your signature. Please remember that field trip forms withaccompanying $20 are due October 2 for our December 8 class trip when we willtravel to the BCC Omni Theater for a Chamber Repertory Theatre production of"The Tell Tale Heart," "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,""The Monkey's Paw," "The Necklace," "The CelebratedJumping Frog of Calaveras County." Students will need a bag lunchthat day for a picnic. We will leave school at 9:30 AM and return ataround 1:30. If you are on the approved chaperone list, and would like tojoin us, just send me an email. Chaperones, of course, travel free of charge. Remember, each student is required to read four books per marking period. Please continue to review the gladesmiddle.organd browardschools.com web sites for information specific to dress codes, rules, regulations, etc.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, plans aresubject to change.
