During these cold winter days ahead, PLEASE make sure your child wears a coat to school each day! We will continue to go outside for recess. We may not stay outside as long! If your child does not wear a coat then they will stay inside with another class!

In reading we will be reading the story, Duke Ellington, Happy Birthday, Dr. King! and Cendrillion. Look for contract work about this story coming home in Thursday Folders!

In Social Studies this year we will be learning about North Carolina the past, present and the future, and much, much more!!

Ways to help your child at home:

Reading:
Our reading stories are typically sent home on Monday and Thursday nights. Please read these stories with your child. Ask them to tell you what happened after reading each page to help with comprehension. Then have them tell you about the story.  We will be using the reading books as well as novels this year.
** PLEASE remember your child is either in my BLOCK 1 or BLOCK 2 for reading. Each block has different learning needs, therefore some stories may take more than a week to complete while other stories may only take one week. No matter which block your child is in it is still important that you read with your child and help them study their spelling and vocabulary words! **

Reading UNRAAVEL

Underline title
Now predict the passage
Run through and number paragraphs
Are you reading the questions?
Are the important words circled?
Venture (read) through the passage
Eliminate the obviously wrong answers
Let the question be answered and write the
paragraph # where you found the answers next
   to the question.

**These are helpful strategies to use when reading a passage. These will help your child during the EOG! **

Prescriptive Instruction (PI):

YAY! Prescriptive Instruction is back! This will be a part of your child's nightly homework, especially over the weekends! This is a web-based program that we are using at school again this year. This is used for added support with reading and math skills. It moves along with the students needs and will not let them move onto another item until they have mastered an objective.  We use PI when we visit the computer lab.  You may also access this from your home computer. Go to the RSS webpage - rss.edgate.com/granites/findyourclass.html On the left hand side of the page you will see PI (Prescriptive Instruction), click on that icon. You will be at the login screen. Students should know their passwords, school code and user name however a paper with this information was sent home 9/25/09.

** PARENTS please check and sign your child's agenda daily! Remember they earn a point when you sign! Also make sure they do their homework too! Thanks for all that you do at home to help your child be successful!!! Together we can help them reach their goals! **

Buckets!! :)
We will be doing buckets for a summer treat this year. We ask that each child bring in a large sand bucket and a treat for each child. The treats will be shared with each child in the class, so please bring in 20 treats.
Examples: Kool-Aid packets, sunglasses, crayons, sidewalk chalk, liquid ice pops, crayon books, etc.
ALL of these items can be purchased at The Dollar Store, Wal-Mart, or the grocery store!
Please have buckets and treats in by June 3rd. Buckets will be going home on Wednesday, June 9th!
