English I

Course Description

Students in English I explore the ways that audience, purpose, and context shape oral communication, written communication, and media and technology. While emphasis is placed on communicating for purposes of personal expression, students also engage in meaningful communication for expressive, expository, argumentative, and literary purposes. In English I, students will:

  • Express reflections and reactions to literature and to personal experience.
  • Explain meaning, describe processes, and answer research questions.
  • Evaluate communication and critique texts.
  • Make and support an informed opinion.
  • Participate in conversations about and written analysis of literary genres, elements, and traditions.
  • Use knowledge of language and standard grammatical conventions

This course has an emphasis on verbal and written communication skills and the analysis of a variety of texts.  Students are required to take the End-of-Course test (EOC) exam and must be proficient. (Level 3 or 4) in order to receive credit for the course, which is a graduation requirement.

Advanced Placement English IV

Course Description

Students in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition will engage in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature.  Through the close reading selected texts, students should deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure to their readers.  As they read, students should consider a work’s structure, style, and themes as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone.

 

AP College Board Goals

1.      To learn to read and comprehend poetry, plays, novels, short stories, and essays

written at various times in various cultures.

2.      To discover meaning in literature by being attentive to language and the various

techniques and strategies authors use to evoke emotional responses from readers.

3.      To justify your own interpretation by reference to details and patterns found in the

text.

4.      To discover insight into a work of literature through writing.

5.      To sustain an argument while guiding a reader through well-organized evidence

drawn from the details of a text.

6.      To write and document a research paper.

7.      To recognize prominent characteristics of style.

8.      To develop a good vocabulary that is precisely used by a variety of sentence

structures, by distinct subordination and coordination of ideas in structured

paragraphs, and by rhetorical devices that reinforce meaning.

 

NC Standard Course of Study Goals

1.  The learner will reflect on and express reactions to print and non-print resources.

2.  The learner will inform an audience by exploring literature to explain its artistry and its underlying social and cultural values.

3.  The learner will develop an argument which addresses and assesses the human condition through a study of universal themes.

4.  The learner will explore and provide critical perspectives through deliberate and thorough analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of text.

5.  The learner will engage in an intensive study of representative British works of     

      recognized literary merit from various genres and time periods with a strong

      focus on the 16th through the 21st century.

6.  The learner will demonstrate understanding and master of standard written English

      and exhibit stylistic maturity.
